Every time I add a desktop shortcut it is automatically added to the start menu. How can I stop this annoying behaviour please Windows 7 64 bit Home Premium.

Thanks but I do not want to stop any attempts "to add, remove, or rearrange items on the Start menu" as per that article but rather just stop these desktop shortcuts being added to the start menu. I have never had this behaviour before and AFAIK it is not the norm

I think this is what you are looking for.

**Right tick on the Start Orb.
**Select Properties.
**Select Start Menu

You should see what you need.

Thanks Jack that was it :)

I had to untick the "Store and display recently opened Programs in the Start Menu" box.

What threw me was that these shortcut were mainly to folders and files not programs. I have changed the default Icons for these which puts a C drive address at the beginning of the Target path (C:\Windows\explorer.exe "E:\My Documents\. . . . )so maybe that is why Windows was seeing these as programs rather than files and folders? It is not very smart sometimes is it.
