I am very frustrated that Windows 7 adds the .jpg xtension to many of my files which are for example:
Adobe InDesign files
Photoshop PSD files
Camera RAW files
Adobe PDF file

Can anyone please tell me how I can prevent Windows from doing this? I archive my files according to the program they are created in and I need to keep all my with file original xtension.

I use adobe bridge so I do not need to view the contents of my files in any Windows Explorer window.

If anyone can help me with this I would be most grateful! Many thanks

Hi and welcome to the Forrum.
When you say Windows adds the jpg extension to the file do you mean you get a pdf file showing as Filename.pdf.jpg or filename.jpg? When did this problem first appear and exactly what did you do immediatelly before it happened?

.jpg added to my file names

I am not sure if I am doing this right as I am new to the forum.

In reply to mitchell65, windows is adding an additional extension to all of my document files, ie: InDesign file would be flyer.indd. Windows 7 adds a .jpg extension so the file becomes
flyer.indd.jpg.

I know WHY windows is doing this, it is doing this because it thinks I want to see the actual content of my file in Windows Explorer. I don't need to see the content of the file and it,s very annoying! I use an application called 'Adobe Bridge' to view and work with my files.

Please, please does anyone know how I can stop windows 7 from doing this, if no one know this then I wonder if I could be pointed to another resource to solve this problem.

Any help would be much appreciated

Thank you

Deborah

...You must have something installed or made some kind of change because this is most certainly not normal behavior, Windows itself is not going to change file extensions unless you or an application that you installed tells it to.

NO that is definitely not the case. Windows 7 will not dd a file extension unless as Logicearth says, you have used a program that tells Windows to do this. This is why I asked in my last post "When did this problem first appear and exactly what did you do immediatelly before it happened?" Can you reply to this please and say whether you have an up to date AV installed. Just as a precaution download and run Malwarebytes from here:

Thank you. This is very strange indeed. I cannot think which application would cause windows 7 to do this. 90% of my software is Adobe Software, some are windows apps the rest are utilities such as SnagIt.

Would looking through the Control Panel help? I will take a look through my installed software

Thank you for your time and help.

No, I don't know what Malwarebytes is. I noticed this happening soon after I bought a laptop with Windows 7 on it. Could be around 2007 (ish). Is it possibile to upload an image of the files to the forum?
Thanks again

No, I don't know what Malwarebytes is.
Just click on the link I sent you and download the free software and run it. It will check your system for malware which could be causing the problem!

That's very odd as Window 7 was not released until October 2009!!!!! Do you mean you have had this problem for 5 years and only just got round to doing something about it?
Is it possibile to upload an image of the files to the forum?
Yes but what's the pint in that? We know the problem.
Have replied to your post in red!
Is your Norton Up to date?

Hi again, sorry for delay. Ok it must have been 2009 that I bought the laptop.Yes my nortons is up to date, it updates regularily - however I would not be surprised if something managed to get though it. I am running a full system scan with nortons, then I will run the Malaware that you recommend.

I will run the software, thank you very much! Could I just ask one more question? Do you know the clean up utility 'SparkTrust PC Cleaner Plus'? is it safe to run this also, my laptop could do with it.

That is all Many thanks

I have just read you email. There really is no need to be sarcastic and

I am sorry if you found my post sarcastic, it certainly wasn't meant to be so. It's just that it does get quite frustrating when you are guenuinly trying to help someone with a problem and they don't reply fully to requests for information that is not forthcoming. I am very willing to try to assist you further but if you are serious about going back to a Mac then there is not much I can do. Just to get my brain staright are you saying that your Windows Laptop has always had this problem right from the day you bought it because if so I would think that it is one of your Adobe programs causing the problem. Most likely Photoshop. I would think a file got corrupted during the initial install. It might be an idea to uninstall PS and re install. Have you got the original disc?

Yous asked "Do you know the clean up utility 'SparkTrust PC Cleaner Plus'? is it safe to run this also, my laptop could do with it"
The general conconcensus of the more experienced members of this Forum is that Windows 7 does not need any third party software of this type. Indeed they can often cause more problems than they cure. There will always be members who disagree with this but IMHO if you carry out normal PC Maintainence from within Windows 7 nothing more should be needed. We can help you complete a "clean up" from withing Windows if you wish. It will take a little time if you haven't done it for the last three years. It might even pay you to do a complete new install of the OS.
