Hi,

I'm using an older computer (DELL E6500) that can still be very useful with SSD and even not that much of RAM. I reinstalled the OS only about 6 months ago and found out that a certain windows update makes it freeze. To be fair, on a machine like this, I didn't want to mess up with updates anyway after the initial reinstall, so I turned the WU off. That still let some updates go through however and I can always tell right away because my laptop would freeze so I'd have to go the last restore point which is made with the update. And then I went to register to turn the update service off altogether since just turning it off in windows update was not enough. And well, you guessed it. My computer just froze again, I looked at the restore points and, even though it didn't say it was the WU update this time (it only said automatic restore point), it definitely helped. Sure, it can be caused by another program but I have no knowledge about anything that would also use the Restore point by it's own besides Windows Update. Maybe MS Security Essentials that I use but that's it? I'm a little baffled about this.

Security Essentials is crap and it won't protect you. Try Bitdefender FREE which is light weight and cloud-based. I've used it many times in 7. Also check out Sandboxie for your browser. It's free, but after about 30 days when you launch your default browser it will pop up a non-registered window and you have to wait 5 seconds to close it. Small price to pay for free. But it will greatly help keep polymorphic malware at bay.

To turn off updates you should just turn off its service. Go to the control panel | administrative tools | services. Scroll to the bottom and find the Windows Update service.

SE has worked for me just in the past and I don't really get in dangerous situations really but I might give a chance to somethinf else. The service has been turned for a few months now. Again, I mentioned that, even going back to change the registry to double on this issue. I mentioned SE because that seemed to be the only thing to override the no updates policy. But I don't really think that's it.

MSE's definition updates show up on WU and they come through automatically. Are there any other updates being installed? What updates are showing up in update history. I suspect if you look it says definition updates for MSE.
