Strange behavior with mom's computer

I guess it's OK. There is no disadvantage setting it high. It is strange though that it needed the 2GBs RAM plus the 5.6GB page file.

Well I aborted the install and then it just sat there forever doing nothing so I used the task manager to get out of the application. Then when I attempted to restart it started installing again starting at 172 (please do not power off or unplug your machine) and I am going to guess that it will again not get past 172, so now what?

If you can get into the system you could hide 172 provided you can figure out which one it is. You cn always go back to a restore point and start anew.

Well I can't do anything at this point because it is attempting the install from the shut down screen and there is no option to abort. My only option is to power off or unplug which I am guess may result in a mess.

Press CTL+ALT+DEL. On the bottom right you then find a power button. Click on the little arrow (not on the button sig itself). Then hold the Shift key down and click on Restart. That gets you into the recovery environment from where you can reset to the last restore point.

The updates will come back. But this time do them in small batches and maybe hide the culprit - if you know which one that is.

That was the first thing I tried but it doesn't come up, even when you hold the keys down. The little blue busy mouse indicator spins and the dots after the text move but other than that it is completely frozen

As far as I can see (not far!) things seem to be going OK - I notice you ran the CheckSUR tool twice at the end of the log - please post the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.Persist.log file.

CheckSUR is KB947821 - either downloaded as a standalone, or through Windows Update.
It found nothing wrong, which is good (but unhelpful! :))

I'll review later when I have time.

Meanwhile work through the Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7 starting with Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware full scans, a Clean Boot, replacing the problematic Avast bloatware with recommended lightweight AV to compare, resolving repeat errors in logs, utilizing system resources to check for solutions to problems.

Then if these don't provide with the standard for Win7 of instantaneous with no-hangs, compare the install you have with the perfect install compiled in Clean Reinstall Windows 7 which has been used by over 1.4 million consumers without a single complaint or return here with problem if they stick with only the tools and methods given.

What would be a less bloated free AV that you would recommend? Avast used to be that way.

I don't believe the problem is any malware or spyware because this is a fresh install I am working with and the reason I started over is because it was dragging despite all scans (virus/malware/adware/disk errors) coming up clean.

It seems to be working fine here at my house, although after start up the first attempt to open Firefox is slow but it's probably because Avast always downloads the database update upon start up.

Tomorrow will be the test when I bring it back to her house.

Thanks for all of the help!

Jack, did you MSE ever find anything. Mine did not. Even when I scanned the system, I got a clean bill of health although SAS and Mbam found malware.
