Turn the brightness down and lower the resolution?

Hi livacana, welcome to the forums.

It is recommended that users of VDUs (Video Display Unit) should have a break every half hour to an hour.

The best thing to do is to adjust the brightness of your display. You can do this by clicking the Power icon on the notification area then select 'More power options' then click 1 of the 2 options i've highlighted in the screenshot, from here you can adjust screen brightness.

I would then suggest less time in front of the display. My work sometimes has me stuck in front of a display for hours on end & i don't have a break (i'm my own worst enemy LOL).

try tuning your cleartype settings to make your font easier to read. just type 'cleartype' in the start menu search and click 'Adjust cleartype text'. Might make text easier to read
