Hello everyone,
I'm have a problem that I haven't been able to resolve. This is a new PC build, one month old, that has been having download issues, frequently freezing in the middle of downloads, and also when watching streaming video, it freezes. On file downloads, when it freezes, I can pause the download, then resume, and it will usually resume the download. I may have to do that 5-10 times to get the entire file. I was just watching a streaming video promo on buy.com's website (about 4 minutes long), and at 1 minute and 6 seconds the video freezes every time. I've tried to watch that video with IE, Firefox and Chrome, with the same results - freezing at 1 minute and 6 seconds with all three browsers. My regular web browsing seems to be very fast, no issues there (I have 6 mbps DSL). My network card has the latest driver (but I haven't tried to reinstall it). I have attached my PC info as a text file. Thank you for any suggestions

Hi Jerald7,

Any other computers in your home that experiencing the same issue?

How many are you in your home that's sharing the 6mbps bandwidth? May not be enough if others are doing the same stuff as yours.

How are you connected? Wired to the Modem or Router? Have you tried both?

Thanks everyone for your response. This computer is hard wired to my modem/router. Yes, I do have several other computers, but none of which has this problem. I don't think band width is an issue here, since the problem is the same, with all other computers turned off. I have checked the Event Viewer, did find some errors, but have resolved all of those, which did not fix this problem.

This morning, I am trying to download an Adobe Flash Player update, but in the download process, when it reaches about 43% downloaded, it freezes. I have tried this about 5 times today, with the same result each time.

My security is the McAfee Security Suite provided by ATT DSL service. The PC also has McAfee Security Scan Plus. All my PC's have this same security package installed.

Any Bonjour installed?

Have you tried disabling McAfee from the Services. Click on Start and type services.msc press enter and locate McAfee Service then choose Disable for now. Uninstalling McAfee completely might also help by using the Removal Tool.

Don't know of any Bonjour installed. I disabled McAfee, including McAfee firewall, then retried the update download, but with the same results, the download freezing at 43%.

This might be a NIC problem. Did you download and install the drivers for all of your hardware, or did you let Windows find and install them from Windows Update?

I downloaded and installed the drivers myself. To add a little more to this, I booted in "Safe Mode" but using the latest IE, still could not download the Adobe Flash Player update. It still stopped at 43% in Safe Mode. I tried Firefox with the same results, but did get Google Chrome to do the download. I can also watch the streaming video on Chrome, but not Firefox or IE.

Can you uninstall McAfee (both programs) completely, then reboot, and see if you still have issues? I'd like to rule out your security software, and the only real way to do that is to uninstall it.

Have you had this problem from day 1, or did it develop later on?

Do all of your computers have the same brand/model NIC, or do they have different ones? I ask because I had a similar issue a long time ago, where normal browsing was fine but large file transfers caused the computer to freeze. My issue turned out to be a compatibility issue between the motherboard and wifi card, which I was able to fix by using an older driver.

Ok, I uninstalled both McAfee programs, rebooted, but still have the same problems. Did I have these problems from day one? Well, somewhat. I built this PC June 24, 2011, and of course you have tons of downloads to update everything and all the drivers. On the Windows Update program, it would often freeze on downloads. Several times I had to run the update utility to fix download problems, then it would finish the download - but only to do it again and again. Sometimes when a download stops, I can pause it, then restart, and it will continue downloading. Sometimes I'd do that several times to get the entire download. So, yes this has been occurring from day one. My computers all have different NIC. The Network card is built in this ASUS mobo. As far as I know, everything is up-to-date, programs, drivers and all. I downloaded the latest drivers for mobo and network card directly from ASUS.

I don't know if it might help, it won't harm to give it a try to change your LAN settings to Public DNS. Pls. change it back to the original setting if it didn't work.

Pls. let us know.

FINALLY SOLVED! I downloaded the latest network driver from Realtek, (although I had a hard time downloading it with this problem), uninstalled the current network adapter driver, installed the Realtek driver and all the problems seem to be gone. I will say, this is confusing, because when I finished the PC build last month, I went to ASUS web site and downloaded the latest drivers for THEIR ASUS mobo, which included drivers for the the Realtek network adapter integrated into the mobo. Since ASUS built it, I would have thought they would have had the latest - but not so. The ASUS network driver for their own mobo, caused all my problems. To everyone, thank you for helping me solve this. Have a blessed day!
