Again today my fan starts blowing like a hairdyer, and I knew what it was. Updates.

Strange because I decided to turn off auto-update altogether so as to avoid this, but it still happened.

Several hours later 16 important updates, and the only one ticked was Windows 10 even though I have been trying to get it to stop harassing me all the time.

IF I decide to upgrade it'll be at the last minute, when I decide to.

Anyway, I've spent a day trying to get these updates to updates but they keep hanging and failing and I have work I need to do!

It isn't scheduled. I unscheduled it. I just keeps coming back. I'm going to take out a restraining order on it. Trying the fix it thing to see if that fixes it, it worked before.

I don't want any updates, even if they are important. I don't want to have to deal with this crap any more!

Is there a way to just turn updates off? I don't want anymore. I'll take my chances. I don't want to have to mess about fixing computers every time I need to update something! I HAVE WORK TO DO!!!!!!

I had it turned off, but the way I know I have updates pending is this fan problem. It still did it!

Facebook Backgammon makes my fan go whizz. So do other things. I know when my fan is whizzing when it shouldn't be, and guess what I was right about the updates. It turned out...

Anyway, I finally managed to get 15 updates to update succesfully, after a day of aargh, so I'm going to restart now and hope that it doesn't goes belly up during that stage.

3 decades of computing and still progress bars don't work, at all anymore apparently. The whole point of a progress bar is....?

The progress is... pick any random number between 1 and 100, and then pick another one.... or if you like, become a cyborg with semi-psychic abilities

There were 17 updates yesterday because it was update Tuesday, the only day of the week you should get multiple updates, but no way should it make your cpu fan go crazy.

But the reason for the loud fan is you`re using a laptop.

Ya I just love windows 7 progress bar, it`s useless sometimes.

But it does work properly on other things, like when you Create a disk image.

Yes I agree, it shouldn't bugger my fan up. But it does.

Someone explained this in another thread why, it's a common problem apparently.

I'm getting sick of fan problems. I had this for years with my mac.

I would ask why you`re even using a laptop, but then I would get yelled at for asking a totally normal question :o

I suppose your employer gave it to you ?

But anyway, a fan on a laptop will always spin faster when needed to, as far as why your PC still checks for updates when you have it set to never check is a mystery.

He did indeed, because he's me! haha

Thank god that's over. Still on schedule, sort of.

Update Tuesdays?

I'll look into that. I'm still undecided really, it might be better in long run to just bite the bulletin. Too busy with project thing at the moment. I need things to just work.

I've been lurking this thread and got curious.

I disabled the Windows Update service, by default it is set to Automatic (Delayed Start).

Now when i open Windows Update and click Check for updates i see the screen print below.
I'm not suggesting anyone should do this, it will have security implications if some updates are not installed.
I just wanted to see what would happen if i disabled the service.

My 7 VM took about 5 hours or so to check for downloads. I just cancelled the actual download after it spent 4 hours "stuck" at 0kb total, 0% complete. I've had this problem for the past 2 months however it hasn't taken this long previously. I don't know what M$ has done but patch tuesday has become a pain in the ***. Strangely enough I don't have these problems with my 2008 VMs which is something I don't get. On the other forum I did read about an update to install manually on Vista and that greatly reduced check time. I suppose that I'll leave it running all night and see if it finishes.

Yep, my 17 updates this past Tuesday took an hour to find and then another hour to download and install.

But that only happens on Tuesdays, any other time it`s fine, I guess because it only finds MSE updates.

That was the kb for Vista. I wasn't sure if there was also one for 7. Updates took 5 hours to install last night but they did install.

Noisy fan again!

Normally it fixes itself after the updates finally come through. But this time it's not going away, and it's doing my head in!

I checked updates, after installing Win 10 on the last day and then reverting back to Win 7 after it turned out to be a total bug farce.

Now, it's apparently still trying to make me upgrade to Win 10! And.. is that what is causing my fan to do constant hairdryer impressions again?

There are things you can download to make your fan die down, but I'm not sure I want to risk it in case my CPU overheats. It's an 8 core intel i7, so the reason it started getting noisy is likely a series of neverending windows updates that have, again, screwed up my system.

I disabled the Windows Update service, by default it is set to Automatic (Delayed Start).

I tried this and my fan has settled down again.

I don't know what M$ has done but patch tuesday has become a pain in the ***.

You're not wrong.
