succesful system image restore but no programs installing

I just installed a ssd harddrive. Windows (7) backup discs ran fine. System image restore seems to have worked fine, only thing is programs are not showing up. This is my first time doing this and everthing I read, prior to, lead me to believe the programs would be included in the system image.

Searched but couldn't find a thread that matched this issue. Any help would be appreciated.

Hello J, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Did you have the programs installed to another drive other than the default C?

If so, did you include that drive in the system image as well? If not, then that's why the programs are not there.

If they were on C, then are they in the C:\Program Files and/or C:\Program Files (x86) folders? If so, then you should be able to create new shortcuts for them directly from their .exe files.

Thanks for the reply.

All programs were installed in C. I used the ASUS utility recovery burner. The utility states that it will "Backup hidden partition to make recovery DVD". I'm wondering if this will only save the files req'd to restore the PC to the original state - if this backup process only saves the files in the hidden partition?

I created discs using windows back up and restore process but the new hard drive wouldn't boot of those discs. It would only boot and run off the discs created by using the ASUS utility backup discs. Once windows is installed I restore from system image and no program files. Not even in the program files folder. All other files show up.

I'm creating another backup on an external drive, using the windows backup and restore process. Though last time I did that I couldn't get the machine to boot from the drive...

I'm sure there's a simple fix. I'm just not seeing it and I'm wasting a lot of time. Seemed like such a straight forward process... I'll just keep on swinging until something works.

Not sure I'm following the thread you posted. Is this to create a system image without runing through the back up and restore process? This seems to be the same process I used for creating the original system image. Though the path is changed so that multiple system images can be saved.

I'm not prompted to select any additional hard drives or partitions through this process. I was assuming that meant everything from the C drive (including programs) would be included.


I'm wondering if the ASUS backup disks included the program information? Thinking I may pick up a few more DVDs and run the windows back up and restore to see if info I need will be on those. Only thing is I did this twice already. Once to a set of 2 disks and once to an external hard drive. Couldn't get either to boot. That's why I created the ASUS backup disks.

I also have a 64gb thumb drive (ntsf formatted) that, for some reason, I'm unable to use.

Yep, it's to create a system image without going through Windows Backup.

By default, all Windows drives are included in the system image.

The USB flash drive may not have had enough free space on it to be used.

Did you restore the Windows Backup or System Image from last time?

A backup is only whatever folders you selected, while an image is the complete drive.
