Suddenly, Windows claims that it is not genuine.

I have a little Toshiba netbook. We have used it around the house for years now as a secondary computer. I have been literally using it for years with no problems. Yesterday it ran a Windows Update and restarted the computer. Now the desktop is black with the message

Windows 7
Build7601
This copy of Windows is not genuine.

I have the product key. So I figured, what the hell, I'll try and activate. I clicked to activate and I entered my product key. It tried to activate but said "something went wrong." Furthermore, there is NO OPTION in my activation options for the over-the-phone activation. And when I click "contact Microsoft for help", I get an error from windows help that it is unable to download from the website (whatever that means).

Anyway, here's my information from the MGADIAG report.

I bought it brand new at a Best Buy in central PA back in 2009. I'm not on the netbook right now, but once I get on it, I'll download and run that tool you linked.

Its a bit odd that it references DELL in the SLIC details. I'll ask NoelDP to have a look at this for you as I've not seen one like this before.

I must admit, I've never seen similar before, either!

Having said that, I can see no reason to call this anything other than genuine.

The problem appears to be that the system has been reinstalled using media other than the manufacturer's Recovery media - the solution is simple, assuming that the COA sticker is intact.

You need to change the Product Key to the one on the COA sticker on the machine's case (or inside the battery compartment), using the Change Product Key link at the bottom of the System properties page.

You may need to activate by phone.
