What is the best way to put another HD in a new machine? I am currently rebuilding a Win 8.1 Lenovo laptop with a massively cracked case (G50-80, so common) with a new case and plan on putting everything back (HD, CPU, MB, etc), and as far as I know everything should boot up.

But, as this project is getting along, some of the components are glued on and it is a bit tricky. So, just in case, I would like to know a good backup plan as I have another Lenovo with the same Intel I3 but it is Windows 7. I don't think an outright switch of the HD will work, so what would be the easiest method of putting the 8 HD into the new 7 Lenovo?

New 8 OS and recover as I have Aoemi backupper with a cloned drive? Or can I just use the clone straight from the recovery drive?

Much appreciated.

To transfer an HD containing win8 to a different machine:

1. Adjust to different hardware:

It might just boot up ok. Otherwise, there are various 3rd party tools that can "adjust to different hardware".

If you have the Pro version of Aomei backupper, it can restore an aomei image to different hardware.

Alternatively, O&O diskimage pro v12 is on giveaway at the moment. O&O "adjust to different hardware" is very flexible. You don't have to restore an O&O image. The module can be pointed at any non booting windows. Therefore it can be useful for hard disk transfers to different machines.

Register for free O&O Diskimage Pro V12 license here:

They send an email. Click the link in the email they sent you and you will receive another email with your license key

2. License for win 8 on the other machine.

One way is to ring microsoft on the free activation telephone number. They might ask if the original machine is broken and ask you confirm you will only use that win 8 on one machine.

Another way is to use a free "upgrade" on the win7 machine. I don't think there is free "upgrade" from win7 to win 8. But there is a free "upgrade" from win7 to win 10.

SIW2,

Thanks for the lighting reply and I will look into those programs and file them away (for future use), as I have successfully managed to put everything back together in the new case and all is good.
