Switching out Hard Drive to 10000 RPM's

I wanna switch out my current HD 7200 rpm to the WD raptor 10000 rpm. What do I have to do to get all the information from my old to new one thanks.

You can go to Back-up and Restore. In the upper left there will be a "create system image" link. Press that and put the image of your current drive on an external drive or DVDs.

You can then switch drives and use the "install DVD" or "repair CD" to restore the image to the new drive.

Better yet just get Clonezilla!

Just get Clonezilla (free open source utility that works great!)

Clonezilla

No hassles, just hook both drives up, boot off the Clonezilla Live CD, choose your source and destination drives... its EASY!

Good point, some of these cloning apps might be easier. There are many options to clone or image your drive. If you need more suggestions I'm sure we can come up with more. I have used this app before. You have to make a bootable .iso but it's not hard.

EASEUS Disk Copy: Free Disk Copy, Disk Clone, Partition Copy Software. Sector by Sector for hard drive backup freeware.

You could always do it my way from those videos. It may take longer but it's easy.

I have never used Clonzilla but with Easeus, you hook up both drives and boot to an .iso CD you have to make, then copy one disk to another. I would imagine Clonzilla is about the same. It isn't hard but may take some reading.

Did you review the tutorial? You download the stable live cd iso here: Clonezilla Live download

THis is an iso that you use to create your bootable cd from... its very easy... really! Review or print the tutorial first if you are worried!

Unless your doing alot of file transfer the difference is measured in miliseconds. You probably won't even notice the difference between 7200 and 10,000 rpm

If you are after a speed upgrade....10,000RPM drives are not the answer. SSDs are.

Of course, back before SSD drives came out...the answer for a speed increase from 7,200RPM drives was indeed moving to 10,000 RPM raptor drives. Gamers and tons of techies felt the 10k's were the way to go by far. So, since that technology hasn't slowed I think it's relevant. There is just a faster option now available.

I think you will see a modest increase in performance going from a 7,200 RPM drive to a raptor. You would see a substantial increase moving to an SSD drive...but for $200...you will be stuck with a 32-64GB drive at best in the SSD variety.

My questions would be;
1). What performance problems are you experiencing now??
2). what do you do with your computer??
3). what are you hoping to gain from moving to 10k drives??

I'd stick with what you have... or add cheaper storage like say a WD Caviar Black, which has not only 7200RPM, but also 32MB cache, and dual cpu's on the controller.... a great buy at under a hundo! <--- I own 2 WD Caviar Blacks... best & fastest 3.5" HDD I've owned!
