Solved System does not boot After Basic Drives were Changed to Dynamic

Hi,

My windows drive(c: ) was full,so i thought to add some space in it. I opened Disk Management Console and 'Shrink' my E: drive to get me 20 GB of free space. While my system was working to create a new 20 Gb partition and assigning a drive letter to it and formatting it ,i was trying to compress my c: drive so as i can get some space for the meanwhile.

i didn't knew that creating a new partition will convert all my basic partitions to dynamic ,now with that said ,i rebooted my laptop only to find that my laptop won't boot anymore.

i tried to tap my way out into bios or in safe mode ,but nothing seems to be working for me.

now all i see is a black screen and blinking '_' curson on top left corner.

please help me out , and tell me a way which will not erase my data,as me and my sister were working on a 'online fashion studio project' and i didn't created a backup for it.

Hi

"Dynamic" disk can be converted back to "Basic" but there is always a risk doing so. What i would suggest will be ;

1. Boot the system using a live Linux disc and copy all your data to an external medium. I am not sure which Linux live disks supports "Dynamic" type partitions - probably "Parted Magic" will do.

Download Parted Magic - MajorGeeks

2. Download "Partition Wizard 4.2" bootable CD and use it to convert the disk to "Basic" without data loss. Please refer the below tutorial for details.

You may need to delete the newly created partition to reduce the total number of partitions to 4 for a successfull conversion.


If everything went okay, try booting in to Windows. If you receive a BCD error while booting, run "Statup Repair" using 7 install disc.

Hi Anshad ,

Thank you for the instructions ,you saved the day for me ,but now i am unable to access any secured websites ,for example google,yahoo...

i tried accessing secured websites in chrome and ie 11 ,it's same everywhere

just a small piece of information more ,i am easily able to access all the sites on my other laptop using the same wifi router

Sorry for late reply. I don't think your partition issue has anything to do with site access problem. Most of the secured sites may not load if data/time settings are wrong so make sure they are correct. If that is not the issue, i would suggest opening a new thread in Network & Sharing - Windows 7 Help Forums section in which you will recieve advise from real experts. I really sucks at networking mate .

A caveat, it's wise never do other file management activities when working with partitioning. In fact don't do any other computer activities, could cause corruption and/or failure. It's all about reading and writing to the drive/partitions which partitioning does in its process.
