System is SLOWWWWW (when starting)

Ever since I installed Win 7 Home Premium whenever I re-boot or wake the system from sleep, it takes several minutes for everything to work smoothly. For instance, when I click on the icon to open my email and web browser, nothing happens for about 20-30 seconds, and then the program launches. But then the program freezes and I get a "not responding" message in the top of the window, and the screen whites out. After a few minutes everything is fine!

This never happened with XP or Vista with the same hardware - any thoughts as to what's going on? I have my win.ini bootup set to only start the important programs, like anti-virus, etc. Maybe I need to revisit that?? But that should not cause such a delay and the "white out".

Thanks!

Need to know more about your rig. Your profile doesn't mention anything more than you using Vista, which you are no longer using. You can update that later, but post that here please. This will also help.

Usually these hangs are caused by software, not hardware. Anti-virus is notorious for creating long boot times. For that reason I recommend Microsoft Security Essentials.

However, any program set to load on startup can do that. Look in msconfig>startup tab. Could you please post a screenshot?
