Solved System Randomly Shuts Off - Since Yesterday [Problem Details Within]

Just disabled all start-up programs under msconfig and services under ccleaner except Adobe Flash Player Updater and CCleanerSkipUAC. :)

Do I just play the waiting game now?

Avira (AntiVirus) re-enabled itself after a reboot under msconfig. I doubt this is to blame as I've been using it issue free for years.

REMOVAL OF P2P PROGRAMS

There are signs of one or more P2P (Peer to Peer) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

As long as you are using any form of P2P networking to download files, you can anticipate malware infestations.

I strongly recommend that you uninstall:

Since you have used torrent software and have some programs of questionable origin on your computer, please carry out the following:

HOW TO USE MICROSOFT'S OFFLINE MALWARE REMOVER
Windows Defender Offline
· performs an offline scan of an infected PC to remove viruses, rootkits and other advanced malware.
· is a free standalone, bootable malware and virus remover from Microsoft.

Download Windows Defender Offline (about 785 kB)
You will have the choice of downloading the 32bit version (x86) or the 64 bit version (x64).
The link will help you determine whether you are running a 32 bit version or 64 bit version of Windows

NOTE!! You can download and prepare a 32 bit version using a 64 bit version of Windows
NOTE!! You can download and prepare a 64 bit version using a 32bit version of Windows.

You run the 32 bit version on a 32 bit version of Windows.
You run the 64 bit version on a 64 bit version of Windows.

The 32 bit download file name is: mssstool32.exe
The 64 bit download file name is: mssstool64.exe

For the curious, this program was originally name Microsoft Standalone System Sweeper.

INSTALLATION:
· Requires an Internet Connection.
· Insert 512 mB or larger USB stick into a usb port.
· Run the downloaded program--mssstool64.exe or mssstool32.exe
· NEXT button
· Choose the option On a USB flash drive that is not password protected
· NEXT button
· NEXT button
.
The install program will:
· format the usb stick using the NTFS format.
· download less than 230 mB.
· name the USB stick WDO_Media32 or WDO_Media64
· use less than 300 mB.

How to UPDATE the Windows Defender Offline USB stick:
· reinsert the usb stick
· run the installation program, mssstool64.exe or mssstool32.exe, again.
· the update will download less than 65 mB.

Since the malware database is sometimes updated several times in a day, always update before running.

PERFORM AN OFFLINE SCAN
Bootup your computer from the USB stick
Windows Defender Offline will automatically perform a quick scan.
After the quick scan finishes, Choose Full Scan
Select all of your drives

The initial, full scan can easily take several hours, but
Remember, your computer is being very thoroughly checked for all types of malware.

generally, a 100% current and paid-for version of Avira will not cause problems. I expected Avira to reinsert itself into the startup list. We will let that ride for now. As you see from my other posts, we've some other fish to fry.

I've just uninstalled Vuze and Drivercleaner as I don't ever have a need for using them these days.

Is SUPERAntiSpyware known to cause issues? I've used it for years problem-free. I used a variety of anti-spyware/virus software on my brothers machine when it got infected a bit back and out of the acclaimed of software I used, SUPERAntiSpyware was the only one to detect any nasties and eventually make his machine safe to use. A friend has some malware and he didn't get rid of it until he used the same software too, it's worth every penny for an unlimited license.

I'll follow the steps to perform a scan with Windows Defender but I'm 100% positive nothing harmful will get picked up/that malware is unrelated to my issue.

Yes, most supposed anti-malwae software will "find" malware, non-existent malware.

If you want 100% protection 100% of the time then remove all AV software and use MSE, Microsoft Security Essentials with link in my signature.

Update:

System shut-downs are still happening - the last two occurred whilst playing a game (Borderlands).

I delved back into my computer case and removed and reseated my graphics card (completely cleared it of dust while it was out). However shut-downs are still occurring mid game play.

I happened to have temp monitoring software running when the shut downs happened. My CPU temp was 45-51°C and my GPU was at 67 -71°C on both occasions. These temps are well within safe operating limits.

Just ran the 15 minute burn in stress testing option featured in the benchmarking software Furmark 10.2; was at around 95% complete when I witnessed my system shut down - the GPU temp at the time was 89°C. Now when I immediately try to boot my computer up it is shutting itself immediately back down. This is making me believe that my issue is temperature related as my system is still too hot from the benchmark, it's likely shutting itself straight back off to prevent damage?

As my CPU and GPU temps are healthy under idle and load with gaming, maybe my issue is related to a part of my motherboard overheating? After some time passed, I could boot into Windows. My MCP (Southbridge) is running at 77°C and my SPP (Northbridge) is at 60°C, both currently at idle.

Any thoughts, anyone?

Personally, I'm not fond of the stress test since that is not real world conditions. When you tell me that the temps are ok during game playing, then I'm happy.

I do suggest:
Remove power cord to computer.
Remove cover from computer.
Direct, at your computer, a table fan or desk fan or floor fan.
Be sure that no sides of the computer are blocked by walls, books, etc.
Reconnect power cable.

Power up computer, Keep an eye on temps. I use SPECCY since it is relatively non-interfering and does the job.

Sorry for leaving you hanging but...

Here's an update:

With my experience I had a hunch it was more likely hardware related as noted in one of my posts. I've gotten in touch with EVGA support (manufacturers of my motherboard) and preliminary steps have diagnosed my issue as to my motherboard becoming faulty. It's getting shipped off to them on Monday.

I'll post back here in a week or so if they confirm the fault at their end once they receive it. Here's hoping it was sorely to a faulty motherboard and my replacement is solid!

Well I regret to inform you all that the geniuses at EVGA Europe sent me out a faulty replacement motherboard. I'm currently in the process of getting them to allocate a UPS consignment for pick up which is taking longer than it should. (I was given the wrong tracking ID to schedule a pick up with - obscene level of support, I know)

They told me they only ship pre-tested boards and this shouldn't have happened, this is a lie, or at least in my case as the board was clearly not thoroughly tested and in worse condition than my original.

Support were polite however their grammar was all over the shop, even substituting the word 'you' with 'u'. A lot of sentences didn't make sense and required some effort to completely understand.

After the questioning the quality of their products and level of customer service I have decided to never again purchase a product from them. I'd highly recommend you follow suit if you want to avoid being unable to use a fully functional computer for nearly 4 months. (and still waiting).

EVGA, you've been named and shamed.

Final update: My second replacement motherboard (though horribly yellowed which had left over thermal paste smeared about) seems to be working after a weeks heavy usage. So my issue was definitely sorely due to a faulty Motherboard. I'll update my first post in this thread with this info.

Thanks again for your time and assistance karlsnooks.

Hope this assists with anyone having similar issue, and don't forget kids, stay the hell away from EVGA products. That is all! :)
