Can you access system repair via F8 key at post?

If not, it could be your recovery sequence is broken and therefore the files needed to create the repair cannot be located.

Yes. I had to yesterday after KB4493472 wrecked my OS and had to go to a restore point.

I've tried the change the decimal point trick without success and tried to modify the registry, but the required subkey HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\System does not exist on either of the two machines up here.

However, I have since found an older 'Windows 7 Repair' disc from which I can hopefully boot.

Part of the problem is that one of the machines has a new-fanglded UEFI which makes things a bit more difficult.

Thanks for your help

If the machine has secure boot, it needs to be turned off. Win7 is not digitally signed.

It works on both machines: legacy BIOS and UEFI (now that I've discovered the UEFI boot menu).

Thanks for your help.
