back up & restore in win7 only gives the option of a CD/DVD drive to create a system repair disk.

How to create an USB system repair disk? I ve looked around on google but can't find a satisfying answer (easy solution).

You can borrow this:
17514x64v24.iso

extract it to usb stick with this:

Yes. Boot it up and have a look.

Do you mean I have to change the boot sequence, and reboot with the disk to check?

You don't have to do anything. A sensible person would take a look at something they just created.
