10 days ago I logged into my admin account and I ran Restore to earlier 'Restore Point'. It appeared to finish successfully and so I logged out. I have been working on my PC since then without any major problems but being logged into my 'normal' account without the admin privileges.
Last night I logged back into my admin account and was greeted by a window saying "System Restore did not complete successfully. Your computer files and settings were not changed. Details: An unspecified error occurred during System Restore. (0xc0000043)". It recommends restoring to a different restore point. The most frustrating thing is that the message is not time stamped so I have not idea when it appeared. I tried to find anything in the system log but did not find anything relevant. I then ran system files checker and that told me that everything is OK. Not sure what is the best way to proceed . Any suggestions?

Hello and welcome bfranek mate can you first please follow this
Now before we can help we do need to know what is in your machine so please do this System Info - See Your System Specs
or either enter the specs of your system in your forum profile the specs will appear when we click on that little box bottom left of the post screen it is for me the preferable option as it is easy. As you may appreciate it is very hard when you don’t know what one is working with for example a diesel or petrol engine.
(pretyped to save time)
Oh and please let us know what AV you are using.

Now a couple of simple things you can do is to try and restore the system again if you can remember just where you restored it to before. I am assuming you ran this restore from a plain account ?? because you say when logged into your admin account you get this message so why not try the restore logged in as admin?? If the restore does not run then it usually tells you there and then. Now youhvae your reasons but why when it is only you are you not logging in as admin??

Next you can try these again and sfc is often thought to be best run for three consecutive runs

Hello and thanks for your reply.
1) I have added a little more information about my system as you suggested.

2) On all the computers I ever worked I have always had two user accounts. One admin for doing admin tasks such as System Restore and the other with normal privileges where I do most of my work. The reason for this is to protect myself against my own mistakes. Maybe a little paranoia.

3) when I was doing the System Restore, I was therefore logged in as the administrator and System Restore finished OK. It was only when I logged into the admin account again several days later I found the Error window. I have been wondering if this could not be some kind of red herring and ignore it or is it safer to repeat the System Restore? The reason I seem to be hesitating is because the restore point is now 3 weeks in the past and it would subsequently involve a lot of windows updates and application re-installations.

4) I will try your suggestions about sfc and disk check

I now ran sfc and disk check. Both claim that there are no problems!

Ok look it might just be a red herring as you suggested and may I suggest that you use a password database in case you find yourself locked out of you admin if you would prefer to have everything under one roof as it were. Personally even though I live alone and no one else has access to my machines except my very young grandkids and under supervision I am totally admin account based.

Now I use Google Keep which stores whatever you like in the way of notes and passwords and that can be accessed from another machine or your phone that has Keep on it.

So for example I forget my login password I only have to open Google Keep on my phone or another machine and there it will be along with other various passwords and info. Now this of course is all stored in the cloud as it were and is encrypted but I take this a step further by encrypting what I put into Keep.

So if for example the password was JosephFranek123 I would add J*****F*****1** now would know exactly what that is and you can use your imagination to encrypt a fairly good password and there you are able to log back in. So in essence it is doubly encrypted because I am that pedantic. Now of course you need to remember the Keep login password to get the other but I tend to load Keep with an auto login on my machines although this means you only have to remeber one password and there are ways of recovering that too.

Having said all that did the restore work??

OK, so finally System Restore worked, but I had to go back about two months and pick up the restore point from a backup disk. Thanks for your help.
