Solved System Restore Error 0x80070057 when running from Windows RE

Hi, I'm having this problem every time I try and run system restore from the Windows Recovery Environment (F8).

This started after I extended my System Reserved partition from 100 to 200mb using Easeus Partition Master 9 . I did this because I kept getting an error when trying to run System Image Backup

The full error message I get is this:

System Restore did not complete successfully. Your computer's files and settings were not changed.

Details:
System Restore failed while scanning the file system on the drive D:\
The drive might be corrupt. You might want to retry System Restore after running chkdsk/R on this disk.

I have tried doing a startup repair and it found no errors. I have also tried chkdsk /R on all partitions and tried the SFC which found no errors.

I was also getting this error when i tried to run system restore from within windows but I found a hotfix from microsoft which solved that issue. So it's just the problem running it from Windows RE now.

Can anyone please help with this? As I am unsure how to fix it. :sarc:

Burdus32 I have the same problem which appeared after moving the system partition to the startlocation of same disk (using Easeus Partition Master). Afterwards "system restore" was active on "C (missing)" and not on "C". I disabled the wrong one and enabled C. My system was running without any issues. But after two weeks I found:

-creating restore points works.
-restore previous version of files works.
-system restore fails with error 0x80070057. normal mode, safe mode, win re... they all fail.

Hi Kaktussoft, the patch you have posted above was the one that I used to solve my system restore running from within windows. Can you get system restore to work within windows now?

I still have not found a fix from running it within Windows RE. Instead I just make regular system images instead now. If things get so bad that I have to run System restore from WinRE then it's probably better to restore a System Image anyway I think.

tried to insert the patch in recovery winre.wim file. tried to run patch from within recovery environment. tried to install cab file from within recovery environment. All fail because... win RE is not service pack 1.

patch only patches files Rstrui.exe, Srcore.dll and Srclient.dll.
So only "system restore core", "system restore client" and "restore user interface". Only used for system restore i assume. So now time to hack! I copied winre.wim C:\recovery\<long so numbers\winre.wim to a safe place in case of trouble. nummber can be found by:
bcdedit /enum all |find "boot.sdi"

Can you find that and make a backup of it? you have a system recovery disk on dvd as well i assume.


Restore operation by using Backup and Restore may fail in Windows 7 SP1 or in Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1

the corresponding files have version 6.1.7601.21765 and can be found in a folder like

C:\Windows\winsxs\amd64_microsoft-windows-systemrestore-main_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7601.21765_none_a55a64b5e323ca67

Do a search for 6.1.7601.21765 and you find it. Can you find them and have they the right version number?

Ps: do everything from an elevated command prompt. and show system files and hidden files. Hope you understand. later more

I've made a copy of the winre.wim file on an external disk and checked those files and yes they all have that version 6.1.7601.21765.

I think he is going to suggest you replace them all manually with the new versions.

That's pretty much how I keep my fancy pe builds updated.

Hi SIW2, which files do you mean? The ones kaktussoft mentioned (Rstrui.exe, Srcore.dll and Srclient.dll) are already all the newest versions (6.1.7601.21765). Sorry I'm a bit a of a newbie when it comes to all this!

Ithink he means to mount your winre.wim and put the new files in.

There is usually a list of them on the ms kb page.

( I normally put the new reg entries in as well - It might work without - depends what they are. )

I'm unsure how to mount the Winre.wim file. I have Windows AIK installed but I am a little unsure on how to use it?

Select an EMPTY folder as the Mount directory.

Browse to winre.wim.

Click The MOUNT button.

You can replace anything in there you like.

When you have finished, click UNMOUNT-COM (that means unmount and commit the changes ).

So, do I need to replace just those 3 system restore files or copy the whole folder into the winre image and delete the old System restore folder/files?
I'm wondering why Windows doesn't place winre.wim in the system reserved partition?

Hi,

I expect you will need to replace at least the mui files as well.

You will find them in windows\system32\en-us.

You can try it and see if it works.

I assume you are using a copy of your winre.wim.

Try it and see.

I'm using the original winre.wim file but I have made a copy of this to an external drive.

Is there any chance my system won't boot if it doesn't work?

No, if you get it wrong the repair disc might not start up - but it won't affect your installed version of windows7.

Ok So I followed the instructions (This was all done after installing the hotfix from Microsoft).

1) Mounted Winre.wim using DISM GUI x64

2) Copied rstrui.exe, srclient.dll, srcore.dll from folder C:\Windows\Winsxs\amd64_microsoft-windows-systemrestore-main_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7601.21765_none_a55a64b5e323ca67 and replaced the 3 files in winre.wim

3) Copied rstrui.exe.mui and srcore.dll.mui (couldn't find srclient.dll.mui file) from C:\Windows\System32\en-us\ folder into same folder in winre.wim.

4) Clicked Unmount-Commit in DISM GUI.

5) Created a restore point to test.

6) Rebooted PC into WinRE, ran System Restore and........................

SYSTEM RESTORE COMPLETED SUCCESSFULLY!!

nice to hear you did it successfully. mui files weren't neccessary. WAIK wasn't needed as well!!
create a temp working folder example c:\worktemp. start an elevated command prompt:


DISM.exe /Mount-Wim /WimFile:<pathtowim>\winre.wim /index:1 /mountdir:c:\worktemp
wim file is now extracted automatically in c:\worktemp
update/replace or whatever you want in c:\worktemp
ready? close all open folder and files to be sure c:\worktemp hasn't any open files
following command commits all changes back to winre.wim
DISM.exe /Unmount-Wim /MountDir:C:\worktemp /commit
following command discards all changes
DISM.exe /Unmount-Wim /MountDir:C:\worktemp /discard
delete folder c:\worktemp afterwards

make a new system recovery disk and test
