System Restore Fails - Event Code 8206

Have not been able to successfully do a Restore for several months (maybe never ... first tried several months ago).

The Event viewer (Custom -> Administrative) shows an error every time with a code of 8206.

I have tried:
- SFC /scannow ... no errors
- chkdsk .... no errors
- made sure 'Volume shadow copy service' is running
- turned off firewall/antivirus software (avast) ... no joy
- rebuilt Windows Management Instrumentation
- troubleshooting via the MS 'clean boot' procedure
... but nothing helps.

Anyone have a suggestion where to go from here?

(Dell Inspiron 545 desktop, Win 7 Home Premium - 64 bit, 6 Gb Ram, 450 Gb HDD - 285 Gb free ... upgraded from Vista before using)

Have you tried running it from Safe Mode. Do you have Norton or McAfee AV Suite installed? Perhaps they are interfering?

No Norton or McAfee programs on my PC.

Could not create a restore point in Safe mode so created in 'regular' mode then restarted in Safe mode and tried to restore .... Failed ... message was (as before) that system restore was unsuccessful ... event viewer showed error 8206.

Try this. Open System Restore settings and turn off System Restore.

Control Panel then System then Advanced System Settings.
Click on the System Protection tab.
Select each drive/partition one at a time and click on Configure.
Click Turn off System Restore then click Apply then OK.
Repeat for each drive.
Close the window and reboot.

Now go back and enable System Restore for your boot drive only. Disable it for any other drive or partition, especially if there is a System Recovery partition.

Now try creating a System Restore point.

System Restore still fails.

Turned everything off ... rebooted ... turned SR on for boot drive only. Created a new SR point successfully but when restored it was UNsuccessful.

Are you having problems now where you need a restore point or you just want to get the problem fixed?

The reason I ask if you are not having a problem then you should make a System Image so you can restore from that unitl this other problem is resolved.
If you already have one then disregard.

Make sure System Restore is turned on.

Type Create Restore Point in Start Search. Click whn it comes up.

Window on left click Configure.
Window on right make sure the yellow circled is marked as mine is.

No problem where need system restore now (good thing because last procedure - turn SR off;reboot;turn SR back on - wiped out previous restore points).

Just want to have System Restore operating correctly - especially since Windows Update creates a restore point each time.

BTW: when previous restore failed (back 2 responses), I tried to 'undo' the failed restore but it too failed.

Well consider making the image as I posted above as a fail safe if you haven't already.

Select to save to a second hard drive internal or external if you have the option. If not maybe you have a back up/storage space on your single HD.

Don't bother with DVDs etc. Useless.

Also check to be sure what I posted in the pictures. I'm sure it is but worth double checking.

I'm looking for alternatives and will post. Hopefully we can get some more help.
I'll make a post for more assistance and see if that helps also.

Have you set up 'calendar events' and changed them? Event ID 8206 Source EXCDO

Have never set up 'calendar events' ... never specifically used Exchange - ALSO

Tried to create image (have 1TB external HDD) but it failed saying "the system cannot find the file specified" ... no file name but event viewer showed code 4104...related to system restore problem?

I think we are getting to the point of a repair install.

This will fix the registry but not harm YOUR files, folders or pictures.

Otherwise you go for a clean install.
Since you ugraded from Vista to Win 7 I hope you have a Win 7 disk.

Restore works after 'Repair Install' BUT

System response seems sluggish - dialogs/prompts and appl
loading/launching seem slow.

I'll monitor before deleting windows.old

A long shot but worth a try.
Try running SFC /scannow.

Use Option #1 Steps 1-2-4.
Run as administrator or elevated Command Prompt as it is called.
If the first pass says it is clean. It just didn't help. Your done.

If the first pass says it ran but cannot fix all the errors then type it in again and run it again up to three times.
Sometimes it takes more than one attempt for it to fix all the errors.
