System Restore moved my files and changed permissions

Hello,

I did a system restore the other day and now my Eclipse workspace, which was in my "Documents" folder, is now gone. When I run eclipse, it opens the workspace still, but i cannot save any changes i make to my projects. It says "Cannot write to file C:\users\robert\workspace\my app\res\layout\file_name_here." When I look in my users folder in c:\users\username\, the username folder has lock on it. In that folder is a workspace folder, but my projects in it have only 2 files when they really should have dozens. I tried giving full permissions to my username for that folder but permission was denied. Does anyone know how I can fix this issue?

Here is an error message when trying to build the project:
"The project was not built due to "Error deleting resource '/My App/bin/classes.dex' from the workspace tree.". Fix the problem, then try refreshing this project and building it since it may be inconsistent"

This all powerful adminsitrator will probably be able to access the files. Then change permissions.

Download and try to find the files with recuva

Check in your older restore points with Shadow Explorer ( ShadowExplorer.com - About ). From there you can probably recover your files (Right click on the file in Shadow Explorer and Export).

It is unlikely though that system restore messed with your files. It is not supposed to touch user files.

It can mess with your files. I have had it delete .exe's on more than one occasion.

It starts after this sentence: "Here are the steps to follow to repair permissions to workaround this issue:"

Then I'd uninstall the Eclipse program and reinstall the latest version to see if that fixes things.

I have an Acer Aspire One netbook with Windows 7 Starter. I also have Avast Internet Security installed on that same computer. For some reason Avast would stop working every couple of days and would need to be re-installed. Finally this last time a pop-up suggested to back-up my files and re-install Window 7s. I did this and now my netbook will not turn on. As it boots up it continues to say Windows 7s cannot complete installing and the computer needs to restart before it can continue. Do I really have to take my computer to a computer service store and pay to have this taken care of? Extremely pissed and dissatisfied with Windows!!!

Did you use install media provided by Acer?



BTW - I just had another load of exe's deleted by system restore - I have copies - but not everyone will have.

In return, it does more harm than good.

Sure... It can get your system back into windows but now you got 50 more problems then the 1 you started with.

Are those random EXE's or just whatever has been installed after the snapshot was taken? (Because I haven't noticed that problem so far)

It seems to depend where they are.

If you have stuff tucked into your windows defined user folders - should be ok .

If you have folders elsewhere - system restore will remove some filetypes.

I have folders on the root of the drive , containing programs I am making/working on, reg files, /dll's etc.

I also put some portable apps. in Program Files, or Program Files (x86).


FYI on this occasion , system restore failed - but still removed a lot of stuff.

I ended up repairing the registry from boot media to fix the original issue.

One more reason to use images. I never mess around with system restore. Half of the time it does not work anyhow.

But then again, everything important on my rig can either be recreated or restored anyways.
I just tried to wrap my head around this as to why that's happening...is the function sysrestore simply "borked" or what?

Looks like its by design.

The job of System Restore is to bring the system state (registry, WMI, COM+, etc.) and all binaries, including executables, back to exactly the state at the time of the restore point. System Restore does not exclude executable files in users’ Documents folders because programs and drivers (or spyware) can be installed anywhere, not just under c:\Program Files.

Thanks for the info, Bill ! I think I was just too trusting so far
It does make sense that "My Documents" isn't excluded and everything after the snapshot is supposed to be gone.
I just wasn't aware of/haven't experienced that happening to random files.
But then again I rely on acronis as my "second line of defense"
