System restore seems to be hanging

Hey all. W7 Ult 64 SP-1

I seem to have caught a virus. Don't know what; I did not find out during a scan... I closed out of a webpage, and all of a sudden my computer got real slow, and whenever I hit ctrl+shift+escape, the TM would appear for a split second and then disappear.

I am trying to do a system restore via system recovery. Hit F8 upon boot, and instead of booting into Windows, I boot to the system recovery options, where I choose system restore. The restore has begun, but I am getting a little concerned, as it has been running now for over 5 hours. It shouldn't be taking this long, I don't think... I am not completely dead, as the progress bar is still moving about, and I can still click on the options page and move it.

The HDD is SATA, 500 GB, and last I looked, 400 GB was being used. I dont know if that factors in or not, but figured I'd mention it.

Any ideas on what I should do here? Should I just let it run - if so, for how long? Should I stop and do a Last Known Good? Should I try to boot into safe mode and try a restore there?

Hello Riff that is an exceptionally long time for a restore - well to me it is and if you are suspecting some sort of infection I would suggest you run this Download Kaspersky Rescue Disk 10 it will boot from the disk or stick whichever you prefer and scan from power up everything and doesn't involve Windows at all.

K, I got it taken care of with Kaspersky Rescue Disk 10 - thanks for the recommendation. Still not sure why the restore didn't work...

Because riffwraith mate the Kaspersky found something that was throwing a spanner in the works somewhere as it scanned through the lot. If you wanted to find out I suppose it will have dumped a report somewhere but as it is working well it would only be out of curiosity.
Now I don't knw hat you are using for an AV but if yu are using a paid for then just make sure it is up to date and keep these for doing the odd on call scans - most of us do and they are free.

If you want free real time AV then this is the list that just about covers all and most of all be vigilant yourself.
