I can't get my system restore to work. I get this everytime I click on recovery. I don't know if it is because I've got win xp and win 7 on separate partitions or what. I've googled it. didn't come up with any resolution.

Hi Quade,

Type services.msc into the start search box. Click it when it pops up.

Scroll down to Volume Shadow Copy service and make sure it is running.

When I found the service, it was on manual. So I changed it to auto. So when I did that this popped up.

Windows build 7000. Didn't do any hacks. All I did was I don't know if this matters or not but removed the send feedback through regedit. that's it.

It may be a problem, but try running this anyway, go to the start menu and type cmd and then right click on the icon and run as administrator, once you have opened command prompt type sfc /scannow and hit enter, this will start a scan of your system files and it will try to repair any corrupt ones, if it finds any restart the computer and see if you can create a restore point.

If that fails you may want to try and enable the send feedback option again and if doesn't help then you could try a Repair Install or you could just upgrade to one of the newer builds, allot of people are still saying that build 7048 has been the best so far.

I'm still running both 7000 builds here presently without problems. But you have to go into the Control Panel>recovery link to see the system restore startup. That's another thing to consider if you are simply trying to go through the usual Start>Accessories>System Tools.

OK, I finally found the problem. First I did a reformat and reinstall. got it installed on separate partition. I got it activated. Installed all my programs again. system restore was working. everything was working just fine, no problems. Where it says windows activation in system. It said it was activated. Restarted computer then went to system again (in control panel) now it says that windows activation is not availabe. Then I went to click on computer and my win xp partition showed up. It wasn't there when I first got win 7 reinstalled. Now system restore won't work. So I think when that xp partition showed up that it messed up some stuff.

So I got xp partition removed now. Is there any way of re-inserting the key code back without having to do a reformat?

Problem solved! Removing the "Send Feedback" using regedit is what is causing this. So don't remove it. This is in Win 7 64bit build 7000. Thanks for helping me.

How can that be the problem when the send feedback was there in the previous screen shot?

OT and probably not the answer you want - but I'd recommend ANY commercial backup product for backup and restore.

The built in Windows restore is a "DOG" and it's no good if your hard disk needs changing / re-formatting etc.

You can image the disk, clone it, bare metal recovery ( i.e if your whole disk goes bonkers you can restore your entire system from bootable backup media to a brand new hard disk) etc etc.

I use acronis true image (Backup software for data backup and disaster recovery in Windows and Linux - Acronis)

OK you have to pay for it but the number of Windows and application re-installs I've saved myself from doing - to say nothing of data recovery makes this for me a 100% necessary application.

With all these builds and tests of W7 you really should look at this type of option -- just backup before installing any complex application and restore if it doesn't work --saves "registry cleansing" etc etc.

Of all the applications I've paid for this without a doubt has been the MOST USEFUL ONE by far. -- Takes around 15 Mins to restore a 35 GB W7 installation (I keep OS and data on different partitions / disks).

(Of course I use things likePhotoshop CS4 and Microsoft Office daily but for Utility type programs you can't beat a proper commercial backup / restore / recovery program).

Cheers
jimbo

Well I woke up this morning and its saying that same thing again that windows activation is not available. I haven't removed anything. So there is something else that is causing that problem. This sucks. I can't think of what else can it be.

You could always try upgrading to the latest build 7068, maybe you will have more luck with that one and the send feedback on the windows has been removed on that build.

You could always try upgrading to the latest build 7068, maybe you will have more luck with that one and the send feedback on the windows has been removed on that build.

That's because the 7068 is coming off of a torrent site not the original public beta page for the 7000s. "Someone" don't want "someone else" getting feedback of certain things apparently since that would reflect any hacks seen. This is why the only build receiving any support is still the 7000 at Technet there.
