System tray problems - network icon missing, clock won't open

My network icon disappeared and I can't get it back. In the "turn icons on and off" section, the pull down menu for network is greyed out. Also clicking on the clock/date does nothing.

I've read around here for some fix suggestions but have only been able to try half of them.

I've reset the notification area icons cache.

I've merged the reg file from #2 here:
System Icons - Enable or Disable - Windows 7 Help Forums
I can't try #1 because I don't have "Remove the networking icon" listed in GP Editor.

My registry does not have HideSCANetwork, as suggested here:
Network icon missing from system tray - Page 3 - Windows 7 Help Forums

What else can I try?

Hi Slickone,

This should work:

Goto Windows Task Manager (Ctrl-Alt-Del), click the Processes tab, find and Right click explorer.exe, click End Process and click OK. Click File, New Task (Run...), type explorer.exe in the box and click OK.

If it doesn't, here is a tutorial by Brink that covers this question and might be of some help to you:

How to Reset the Notification Area Icons Cache in Windows 7

I hope this helps!

As I said, "I've reset the notification area icons cache".
That file also ends and restarts Explorer.

I wasn't able to perform all the steps from other posts.
Why don't I have "Remove the networking icon" listed in GP Editor?
Why doesn't registry have the "HideSCANetwork" key?

Hi Slickone,

run the 2 standard repair tools please
KB947821, SURT for 64 bit comps
Download System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB947821) [October 2014] from Official Microsoft Download Center
and chkdsk.

As the options are greyed out it would imply a permissions problem, if the tools above do not correct the problem please download Tweaking.com repair tool
Tweaking.com - Windows Repair Free/Pro

It comes with complete instructions
Opt for the Portable version, (options 3/4) and select ONLY reset registry permissions
The ouput log will advise if any changes on your comp have been caused by malware
