System won't start up after update

I had over 25 updates to download and install because I didn't do it straight away knowing it would prompt me to shut my computer down every 4 hours - which I cant stand.


After about a week of getting annoyed with the "updates available" icon and text box which pops up, I decided to download the updates, but was not ready to restart the computer. I looked into how to disable those annoying pop ups letting you know your time is ticking down before Microsoft takes over your computer and shuts it down.

I went to the dos prompt and followed instructions I got from a website to disable the messages for 24 hours and my computer was still on the next day.


Last night, I finally shut down and then this morning when I went to turn on my computer it was stuck on the "windows is starting" screen for 10 min. I had no choice but to shut down my computer and when it came back on, I had the option of loading normally or loading with repair tool. I picked normal and it re-loaded to the same "starting windows" screen with nothing else happening. I again, manually shut it down and this time picked the option, "repair tool."


After 20 min, the repair tool told me it couldn't fix the start up problem and asked me if I want to system restore. I said "yes." This brought me back to yesterday, and it seemed to be ok, so I had to fix my anti virus which now was "off" due to the system restore and I then rebooted. It rebooted properly. I then went to download the updates again and upon reboot with the updates, when it got to the "windows is starting" screen, the same thing happened. It wouldn't move past it. I had to manually shut down again and do the repair tool again and system restore again to get back in.

By then, I knew the windows updates were my problem, but I didn't know which one, so I decided to try to download each one separately. After I downloaded the first one, it froze again upon reboot at the "windows is starting" screen. I didn't think I was just lucky in picking the right one first and it took me over and hour that last time to use the repair tool to get it to load to the desktop.

Now I'm afraid to load any windows updates because something in them is messing with my start up and if I can't get into my computer, I can't do anything about anything. I did reboot after this because again, my anti virus software was out of whack and rebooting after fixing it and that was not a problem.

It's only when I try to download any Microsoft updates do I have a problem with starting up. Aside from not ever getting an update again, what can I do to fix this problem? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Your post is very difficult to read because it's just one large block of text. If you had split it into small paragraphs it would have been easier to read and understand.

To start with why will it shut down your computer every 4 hours ? Depending on the updates you don't always have to do a reboot but it would be better to do a few at a time and reboot after each batch.

Have you run a virus scan lately to make sure you don't have any nasties hiding ?

* Please list all your current Security software.

* Did your computer come with a preinstalled Anti Virus program?
If so what?

I did put it into paragraphs, but when I posted it, it condensed it to one paragraph. Maybe I just don't know the syntax of this website, but when I wrote it, there were multiple paragraphs. Maybe because it was so long, you missed what I said. It created a restore point, that's how I got back in each time, but when I downloaded the updates again, the same thing happened and I had to do system restore each time. I am not shutting down my computer every 4 hours. That annoying Microsoft reminder that you need to restart pops up every 4 hours and if you don't keep postponing every 4 hours, it shuts down your computer when you dont want it to.

I do have an anti virus program as I stated above and I also have malaware bites. This is not a virus. This is a bug called Microsoft Updates. Can someone please help who has actually read what I wrote although it is difficult to read? Thanks

Since no one seemed to know what to do here, I just hid the updates and waited for new ones to arrive to see if the problem would happen with new updates.


It does.


It seems like all the updates I install are effected upon reboot and the system won't start up.


Can anyone out there give me a hint as to what the problem could possibly be? Something is interfering with the reboot process after downloading and installing new windows updates. there has to be a solution....

Ok, I did the scan. At 100% complete it said it didn't find any integrity violations.


I checked out the Windows 7 Failure to boot link, but that's if you're having problems booting your computer. I'm only having problems booting my computer when I install Windows Updates. After it won't boot, I do a system restore and then there are no more updates and I reboot just fine; except I can't download any windows updates.



There is no problem with start up right now, so that link doesn't tell me what to do when I need to startup after a windows update. It's not a virus. I have run several virus scans and my system looks clean.

Something within the windows updates is interfering with the start up process. The only option I have right now is to disable Windows Updates - which I have done. However, this is not an appropriate solution. I need to figure out what about Windows Updates is suddenly non compatible with my Start up and I have no idea how to do this.

There are about 25 updates, I can't name them all. It doesn't seem to matter which ones they are, they are all not working. Even the new one I got today isn't working. Something is preventing them from being installed properly and/or is affecting the start up process.

You didn't tell us which version of Windows 7 you are using so just chose the version applicable for your computer.

As an aside, to create spacing between sentences just press the Enter key twice at the end of each sentence.

Solved?

Has this ever been solved? I too have anti-virus AND malware-bytes installed and windows locks at the 'starting windows' screen after performing windows updates. Unfortunately I am now out of stored last good profiles.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

It's an HP laptop with windows 7 64 bit.

Hey guys, I wanted to come here to let you all know that I have had the same problem but following the instructions of "seavixen32" with the link provided on page 1 it has now fixed the issue 100%. It's about 500mb or so and takes quite a while for it to setup but it definitely fixed the windows update issue.

My computer now restarts fine without resorting to a repair start up all thanks to "System Update Readiness Tool". Could be why you never got a response from the person who made the thread. Could be that it was a fix and he/she just didn't return to give feedback.

My issue was exactly the same and this for me at least was a success. Big thumbs up! (SOLVED)

It'd probably be a good idea for you to upload your CBS and CheckSUR logs anyhow (in your own thread, please) so that we can check that everything is now OK - or did you look in the CheckSUR.log file to see the results?

I never replied because I gave up. The problem was solved when I bought a new SSD drive and had to reload all the updates from the start onto the new drive. So, no, I have no idea if that solved the problem or not.
