taskbar and annoying messages from it

I am unable to delete icons from the taskbar.
I went into "select which icons and notification appear in the taskbar" and they are all
greyed out.
Beats audio from HP, new update are available, network internet access are the ones
with the annoying messages
Can't find out in Godmode or windows help how to solve this.
Please help.

I tried Windows 8 and IMHO what a disaster it is......

click the arrow to show hidden icons,
select customize,
this will open the notification area icons window
there you can select the icon you want and click the dropdown arrow to have three choices ,

• show notification and icon,

• hide icon and notifications,

• only show notifications.

Thanks BoohBah for responding.
As I said before the Notification windows is greyed out. I can not alter anything.
All I want to do is remove several items from the notification area.

Look down at the bottom of that screen for a checkbox for "Always show all icons and notifications on the taskbar". If its checked that will grey out all the other options. Remove the checkmark from the box and you should be good to go.
