Taskbar disappears

Hi there,

just want to confirm it too! I use a NVIDIA 8800GS with the newest drivers available.

Also for me nothing helped except for the trick with the screensaver.
I now deactivated the screensaver, hope that helps. Don't need it anyway.

jxerot: i think it's not a solution. I do this trice a day, and I hate it.
The same with dwm.exe - almost every day I get a problem when my desktop goes black and all I can do is kill dwm.exe

Hi all.

This is still happening in Windows 7 Ultimate (RTM), so it's not the Beta editions causing this.

I'm going to search a bit more before I install Windows 7 Ultimate (Retail) as there is no real difference, supposedly.

However, in the meantime, what I've done is create a batch file on my desktop that kills the explorer.exe task and then restarts it. If you would like to do the same, here is how I did it.

1. Open Notepad and type in these two lines.
Code:
taskkill /F /IM explorer.exe
start explorer.exe
2. Save the file as whatever.bat.
That's it. Works for me and is a lot quicker than manually closing and reopening explorer.

If you're not sure how to save a file as bat, in Notepad, Click File>Save As. Change the "Save as type:" to "All Files (*.*)", then name your file what you would like adding .bat to the name. Click Save and you're done.

Hope this helps someone.

dwm.exe is Desktop Window Manager. If this is causing crashes, it may be corrupted.

Open Command Prompt (run as admin) and type this:
Code:
sfc /scannow

Tell us what your results are.

I have the same problem and have been searching various forums for days. Apparently tons of people have similar problems. For the record I have an ATI 4870 video card so Geforce isn't the problem. I can't believe that MS would introduce a brand new OS with all the hype and you can't get thru to them to fix this problem. Thanks for the screensaver temp fix, at least it works, but it pisses me off, MS gives you all these fancy themes and screensavers and they screw thing up.

Is the setting to auto hide the taskbar cleared? And the option for a window to cover the taksbar?

I ran scannow, the screen blinked but I saw no window or anything so I don't know if it actually ran. At any rate, it didn't work.
Of course autohide is unchecked and the window doesn't cover the taskbar area. Microsoft just contacted me and wanted to know who the "a lot of people" are that reported this issue. I linked him to this thread. If he gives me a solution, I will report it here. Meanwhile if anyone else figures it out, please post.

ATI HK4870x2 with Asus Rampage 2 Motherboard with W7 Ultimate 32 bit version (don't ask, har)

C:\Users\XXXXX>sfc /scannow
Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.
Beginning verification phase of system scan.
Verification 100% complete.
Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

killing restarting explorer does resolve, appears to be related to screensaver, trying different SS's now...

Same problem

I left my computer on for a few hours, came back, my taskbar was also gone. I've tried selecting/unselecting auto-hide taskbar and opening some apps from the start menu, but still no taskbar. However, it works if I close explorer.exe in task manager and then restart it in run, as mentioned above. It's very odd. Why does this happen? I hope Microsoft fixes it in an update soon.

I have the same problem. The taskbar disappears after the screensaver runs. I have Home Premium 64-bit and an ATI card. Using the "Preview" option in the screensaver settings makes the taskbar reappear. Glad it's not just me!

This is a strange problem....

I might recommend a video driver update.

I don't think it's the video card. I know my driver is up to date. A fellow from Microsoft "Engineering Windows 7" was in touch with me a couple of weeks ago, but nothing since. I'll email him again to see if anyone is actually working on it, because he initially thougt it was only a couple of people having this problem. I assured him it was a considerable and growing number. Too bad, it's my only complaint with W7 so far, but it is irritating when you have to preview the screensaver several times a day to get the taskbar back.

Try an older driver and see if it still occurs.

Well, as per some of you guys, I've experienced the same issue whereby after resuming from a screensaver (in this case fliqlo) - on occasion, the taskbar has gone, and all I can see is the windows icon start button.

The screenshots posted by some members earlier are just like what I'm getting.

I'm running W7 Ultimate, with all the updates/patches applied.

I think W7 should be more resilient than that - especially since the screensaver isn't crashing or anything.

I believe this is a bug. I wonder how we can report it to microsoft.
