Solved Taskbar - open programs on the right

Is there any way I can have my pinned programs on the taskbar separated from the programs that are running? I saw on my friends computer that all the programs he had open were on the right. The icons to start the programs were still on the left. So, when I click on, say, Chrome, the pinned taskbar icon remains unchanged. Instead, a new instance is opened on the far right. When several programs are opened, they are all grouped together. Unlocking the taskbar allows you to drag the barrier between the "opened" and the "available" sections.

I hope I'm making sense. I don't have a screenshot to show what I mean. Thanks all

Ok, I'm not entirely sure and if I don't help then feel free to disregard but here's the approach I would take. First enable quick launch to lauch your programs from: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/888-quick-launch-enable-disable.html

Next get rid of all of your icons from where they are pinned on your taskbar (once they are transfered to your quicklaunch)

Then I would use this tutorial to get the programs to be where you want: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/20602-taskbar-center-icons.html

I'm not complete convinced it's a better system (QuickLaunch) than the standard task bar but I'm going to try it. It seems funny that I have never heard of it even though I've read many forums and "Top things to know about Windows 7" lists. I don't understand why functionality like this is introduced in software without providing quick and easy ways to use it. Anyway, thanks again.

Glad to hear that you were able to accomplish what you set out to do.

The quicklaunch was actually a feature in Windows XP and Vista that Microsoft wanted to replace with the 'superbar', but unfortunately I don't know of any other way to accomplish the desired effect you were looking for without the quicklaunch.

Haha. I just dawned on me (and my slow brain - be it the grey or the white stuff) than the quicklaunch tool bar is exactly the same as from Win XP! It seems different considering the other changes in the task bar. It seems a little like the Mac interface. But, it's like the same and stuff. Silly me.

As an alternative, you can use the toolbar(s). I find that a lot more practical than Quick Launch because you can have subfolders: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/72092-toolbars-how-use-windows-7-vista.html
