Thank you responders: New Folders Returned

Thanks to all that responded to my inquiry about my "New Folder" missing in Hotmail - or Windows Live Hotmail - or whatever it is called now. Web based.

I did contact the Hotmail Support by using their help form.

As I stated before, I got the standard answer: Just go to " NewFolder" and create a new folder. BUT that was my problem. There was no blue " New Folder" link anywhere on my Hotmail page.

Well, today, I just noticed that the blue "New Folder" has appeared. Miraculously appeared today.

I'm guessing here, but maybe I was not the only one that had this problem - and other with web Hotmail complained about the same.

But again, thanks to all that responded.

I lost my blue new folder tab 2 weeks ago also. Waiting for the vapor to congeal into my missing link is not what I need. Anybody else have any ideas. Thanks.

This is only a guess, but judging how fast the link works, it seems it may be running code on the local machine. Maybe the computer and browser need to be ready to run the code. You could try rebooting the PC and resetting IE (internet options/advanced). Or perhaps your anti-virus is trying to protect you so you could try turning it off or uninstalling it and use MSE instead.​

That option enables me to create a new folder. That is all. Also, I can move mail into a folder from my viewing pane. Other than that I can't delete messages from folders, can't delete folder itself, can't rename folders. Per roncerr I made Windows Live mail my default program, restarted and nothing changed. I'm not sure what roncerr's reference to running code or MSE means. I'm not a techie. Thanks for the replies thus far.

Hotmail, which only requires a browser, is web based. If your default mail program is Windows Live Mail, the downloaded mail program which is part of Windows Live Essentials, that program is not web based; it opens and is used separately from the web browser all by itself.

The Hotmail website, viewable through your browser, has a blue "New Folder" link that Hotmail users can use to create new folders. Those people are not using WLM. If you were having problems with Hotmail and its blue folder, I was addressing ways to fix the browser which I assumed was IE8.

The downloaded program, WLM, which you use without viewing through your browser, does not have a "New Folder" link in blue or in any other color. However it is possible to create new folders within it but you need to read the help file for the program (WLM) to learn what can be done with it and how to do it.

1) It depends on who you trust to own and maintain the archive of your past sent and received emails. If you want to do that yourself, that's what an email program like WLM will allow you to do. If you'd rather leave it up to a web-based email service provider (like Microsoft, Google, or Yahoo), the Microsoft version of that is Hotmail.

2) Another factor is the speed of reading messages one after the other. An email program like WLM downloads all the new messages to your computer all at once. As you read through them it goes quickly since there is no back and forth commands over the internet to switch from one page (or message) to another. The only slowdown is when you click on a link within the email to go to a webpage that must then be dowloaded. With web based email, each time you return to re-read an email, it needs to download it again just like any other web page. Also, sometimes web-based email includes ads to pay for the so-called "service".

3) Another factor has to do with how many different computers you will be using to view your mail. If you want them all to have equal access, with no one computer used to download and save, then web-based email seems natural. However email programs can accomplish the same thing by setting the option to "leave mail on server" either on all machines or on all but one main machine.

4) Another factor is complexity. Web based is fairly easy to use with fewer settings and options. A program like WLM can be fairly complex with many settings and options.

In the end it's a matter of preference. What do most of the people you communicate with use?
