The application failed to start correctly (0xc0000006)

Hi,
I am having problems with my Windows 7 x64 bit desktop Computer. It was working fine before the holidays. When I booted it up yesterday, it took an unusually long time to "fire up". I immediately noticed also that I cannot run any of my application on the computer, (Word, Malwarebytes, AVG etc). Every time I try, I get the following message "The application failed to start correctly (0xc0000006). Click OK to close the Application"
I rebooted in safe mode and tried to open the same applications but got the same result.
I also ran sfc/scannow in safe mode and it was unsuccessful because message saying "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation".
Is there a way of fixing these issues I have with my computer without having to reinstall Windows?

As much as Kaspersky scanned, it may still be infected. Download a rescue disc like Hiren's Boot CD (Hiren's BootCD 12.0 - HTTP Download) or UBCD (Ultimate Boot CD - Overview) and run the virus/malware scanners built into the packages.
