the best defragment program?

Like I said, it is a subjective decision. Mine is probably influenced by the fact that I'm running old hardware that I feel needs all of the help that it can get, and also by old habits formed by archaic logic. Whatever the case may be, since the program is paid for, I will continue using it.

To defrag or not to defrag, to stick with Windows native defragger or look elsewhere for a free defragger or buy a defragger is all in the domain of an individual's preferences and perceptions.

How many of us have the ultrafast SSD drives? Until such time these drives come out in as large capacities as the other kind of Winchester drives :) and become affordable, many people will continue to use the platter drives.

Given this scenario, I do feel defraggers is a necessity and cannot be wished away.

That Windows 7 does not require a defragger is far-fetched. If it were so, why should MS embark upon providing a much improved Defragger in Windows 7?

Disk Defragmentation

I had always gone with Raxco's Perfect Disk for a longtime now and Perfect Disk 11 is what runs on all my machines. I defrag atleast once a week that apart the stealthpatrol mode in which it runs. I care not to quantify whether it has increased my PC's performance and whether it is in microseconds, nanoseconds or picoseconds. If I believe that it does good and am happy with it, that is it.:)

I have file servers in my corporate environment running Windows Server 2003 that haven't been defragged in 4+ years. Performance doesn't seem to have suffered whatsoever, no complaints and files are copying as fast as the network cards will allow. And I have a file server in my home that has never been defragged. Just offering as evidence that defragging might not be absolutely necessary either.

Interesting.....

Welcome to the Forums Bill R TechSpec :)

Having Fragmented Files Does not slow the system down in some cases, I have a 10 year old machine running XP Pro that has never been Defraged and the only lag i experience is from the graphics card being out dated (x1050).......

I'm interested......

If you are sure you have never defragged your XP machine in 10 years, could you possibly analyze your HD for fragmentation & post the results?

Windows 7 defrag works for me. If you use restore points, make sure you use a defragmenter that is VSS aware if your disk block size is less than 16Kb (Windows 7, Diskkeeper, NOT defraggler).

The "to defragment or not to defragment" question has already been answered by Microsoft on Windows 7 and Vista. It's really an "aha" moment when many people find out that on Windows 7, the defragmentation is set take place once a week, by default. :D

To make that clear, "by default" ;)

It does not seem to. I know when I checked my brothers PC his drive looked like a murder had taken place, and he complained about slow file access and the like.

So I put Auslogic on his PC and he's been happy ever since, or as happy as one can be with such a mundane task taken care of:p

you mean this one.

UltraDefrag - An Open Source Defragmenter

I don't know of any open source programs that ask for money.
Always nice when some idiot virus writer gets hold of or uses the same name for the junk they peddle.

I have Disktrix for 29 and I have 2 ssd'd that don't need defragged of course but I can configure it for my mechanical drives and it improves it for them as far as 3 points on the wei scale it depends on how it's configured and what benefits you want. You can't do that with any other defragmenter that I have found. Anyhow I don't write to often to my ssd's but all writing is done to the mechanical drives, just the operating system sets on the ssd..

No, that appears to be the one listed in the Symantec article. I'm referring to this one:

Disktrix - Two Amazing Defragmentation Software Titles - UltimateDefrag And DefragExpress

EDIT: As far as junk goes, I agree with you regarding Symantec.

No, that's a real defrager. If Source Forge had people hocking malware that would be the end of that site.

I read up on Disktrix program on Wilder, very buggy and the update log seems to support this.
I have done more than read about it, I have used it quite a bit when I ran WS2K8, and there was nothing buggy about it. The main reason that I bought it was because the other mainstream defraggers were extremely expensive for servers, Ultimate Defrag was not, because it ran the same on all Windows versions.
