Hi all, I need a heads-up.

As recently as the other day, I switch the pc off normally, expecting the same as usual, blah blah, but the next day, on booting up, the system just hangs at the "Starting Windows" screen for no reason.

Using safe mode don't work, hangs on the aforementioned file. I can't restore or repair either - hangs also.

i have noticed other people have had problems with this as well, and Ive followed previous efforts - i.e. running Ubuntu from a disc, and copying another x64 W7 copyof the file onto my system to see if that worked. Nothing.

While having a search round on forums for solutions, and leaving it to just sit there, it decides to burst into life and go into windows. Thought nothing of it, and decided this morning to restart it and see what happens, and low and behold, it goes back to what it did the pervious day, and just hangs.

Many posts i've seen have been people with HP, dell etc laptops/desktops. Mine's custom built, with these specs:

Asus P5q pro turbo with Q9550
2GB RAM 1x2gb
Nvidia GTS 250
1TB HDD Split into two partions 100gb/850gb (approx.)
SB X-Fi titanium.

I'm wondering if anyone can offer any other suggestions to get around this, or has had this issue and managed to resolve it?

Yeah, i have.

The problem is....the computer still hangs - before I can even get to that stage - it appears and has the "loading circle" mouse pointer, and just stays there forevermore.

Appreciate that but you don't need Windows to boot up to follow the Start Up repair. You need to set your PC to boot from the CD drive first. When you switch on, before getting to the Starting Windows screen you should see the bios screen that gives the "Boot Sequence" Key. It usually says "Boot Up F10" or similar depending on your Bios version. Press the appropriate key BEFORE Windows starts to boot up. If you miss it, switch off and try again. You might have to try a few keys to get the Boot Sequence Up . When you get it use the direction arrows to choose CD ROM Drive. The mouse won't work at this stage.
Then you should be able to follow th instructions in the Guide I linked to.
Come back here if you need more help

I think the OP may have an on board graphics card. May be wrong but he has mentioned a separate sound card but not a graphics card!

Hi again

Ive started work on the problem. Followed instructions, but the installation was so slow - its taken an hour to get to the windows 7 CD install to get to recovery - and so far its got further this time.

Im trying to restore to a point on 22/07/10 (2 critical points ago) - and its just failed...

System restore failed to extract file classpnp.sys from the restore point as it was damaged. ???

Even with the system restore (i did get to it, and allowed it to complete repairs) it still don't want to know.

*edit i think the only solution is to drop this unit off a bluddy building....none of the aforementioned works at all.

I'm confused. Are you trying a Recovery or System Restore? Two quite different things.

Hi again.

Just a mention to repair installs....I couldn't get into W7 anyway, so it wasn't really of any use to me.

The recovery you suggested to me I tried. I got the boot sequence, went to CD, took a while, and tried the options. Nothing. I know for certain - after failing on all restore options (recovery AND system restore efforts) that even reinstalling the OS fluffs up at Expanding Windows Files (0%).

Next course of action is formatting the partition. It's a 1TB drive, with the fault on the smaller W7 section (100GB) with all my data, games, music blah blah on the other partition. (D: drive.)

I'll see if a format/deletion of all directories kicks it into life.

Hi Devilish
When you say "went to CD, took a while, and tried the options." What "options" did you get?
Also when you say "that even reinstalling the OS fluffs up at Expanding Windows Files (0%)." Am not sure wgahat this means. The OS fluffs up is not a term I am familiar with!
Are you trying to Re-install Win 7 over the top of an existing copy or have you formatted and re-installed?

Lol, sorry for the bad terminology.

What I meant was, the installation basically failed at that point.

The option I did get was a System Repair. And the screen went black; and nothing happened at all.

Currently, the HDD has been quick-formatted; and a fresh re-install of Windows 7* to see if this can do any better.
