I thought that was the Microsoft surface pro commercial, it claims it can replace a laptop or notebook or tablet.

Wouldn't it really depend on the tablet you buy? Microsoft surface pro comes really close, but it restricts software that you can put on the device. It does have USB. It may or may not have a cd/dvd but you can buy a usb/dvd burner to plug into a usb slot. I think you can add a USB mouse.

I don't really count Hybrid devices as tablets.
IMO, they're more like "breakable" laptops.

Apart from portability, is a $1k Hybrid better than a $1K Desktop?

I can see and everyone can see that Windows 7 remained,remains and will remain the most used OS in the world for at least some months.What will Windows 10 bring to us? Let's see.:huh:
Mike,that's why we put tablets as a different category than desktops and laptops.
Tablets are primarily used for portability,otherwise laptops would be more used.
Anyway,I'm surprised to see that Android has a lower usage than iOS.But I use an iPhone and an LG tablet (G Pad 8.3),so I can tell about the two OSes.
Of course,buying a desktop for $500 is smarter,but it depends on whatever someone wants.
If I could,I would just delete 8.1 from my computer but I heard MS will provide 10 as a free update for 8 and 8.1 users.Why lose the opportunity?

If you do the vast majority of your computing at home then i would ALWAYS choose a desktop and i think the overwhelming majority of people do most of their computing at home.

Imo tablets are a pita and if i needed portability i would always go with a smaller laptop or even a netbook over a tablet .

I don't care if the tablet is a few ounces lighter , if i can't handle the extra weight of a smaller lappy or netbook i'll start lifting weights.

A full two-point jump is quite an event in these parts at the best of times, but it's just embarrassing for an OS that has already been superseded.
Users are likely to be hanging on for Windows 10 now. The preview build of the upcoming platform is holding steady with just under one percent of the market.
Windows XP, meanwhile, continues its inevitable slump, although still at a far lower rate than one would expect for a defunct operating system. This month it sits at 16.94 percent (-2.21). Poor bedraggled Vista, with its even more painful death, is at 1.97 (-0.14), dropping below the two percent margin.

I try to remember that all computing devices have their place and uses.
None were designed to replace the other.
None will do all the things other computing devices do.
My 80 pound desktop is not very portable. That is what laptop,tablets and cell phones are for.

These devices are designed to fill the needs of certain markets. They were not designed to replace anything but rather to be included to ones computing devices.

Portable devices are desired and needed by many in todays computing world but that doesn't mean everybody who added portable devices to their computing Toolbox got rid of none portable devices.

I'm a desktop person at the present time. When the need or my desires change I will include portable devices and of course keep using my desktops also.

I will say though (just regarding the usefulness of tablets) that right now I'm typing this response on my girlfriend's iPad. She got one of those Bluetooth keyboards working. Man I tell ya, I am fully productive on this, at least with text and word processing features. All one needs now is to use Google or Zoho apps (like spreadsheets and word processors) and you're fully productive (as far as most might be concerned anyway).

Again, don't take this as me being a "Windows hater". This concerns me as much as anyone as to what this spells out for the future of Windows. As for me, I still need audio editing and production abilities, so the desktop and its processing speeds are a requirement. But I'm sure there are many that could settle for what this iPad and keyboard combination provides.

I had never had a desktop on my own,I just used in another place in an older time.My first computer was a laptop (portables called then) which had Windows 98,after which I upgraded until XP.
Then I bought a newer laptop with XP Home and upgraded for a little to Vista,which I deleted then because it gave lots of BSODs,as it does in my current computer.
After that,4 years ago,I bought a Toshiba laptop with Windows 7,which was perfect for me then.Unfortunately,it was stolen after 1.5 years.
Finally,I bought this one.I think I managed to install Server 2008 (which is unbelievable,because it shares the same kernel as Vista and our little culprit gives BSODs 0x0000001E (0xFFFFFFFC00000005,0xFFFFF800014B1CC7,0x0000000000000000,0xFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF) for SP1).SP2 gives different code at second parameter.
Anyway,I see that the best machines I had ever had are the two latest ones.

The present time LB ? I kind of feel the older you get the more likely you will remain a desktop person , we as people tend to become less portable with age and i would think a non portable device would suit us best .

Settle is the key word here , i have tried all types of tablets and keyboard combinations and they are all a pita to me lol.
