The volume bar shows sound but no sound through speakers.

Solution!

Go to sound by either clicking control pannel, then type sound, or right click your audio icon in the right hand corner and click playback devices, go to your default audio device, hit properties, go to custom, and uncheck Digital Output.

when my laptop suffer from similar problems like yours (volume bar shows sound but no sound through speakers)

I realize that I try ubuntu in my usb a while time ago, so I:

1. Shutdown my computer.
2. Plug in my ubuntu usb.
3. Turn on my computer, and press esc, to boot from usb.
4. I choose try ubuntu without installing.
5. While in ubuntu, I plug in the speaker and I adjust the volume bar to max, make sure that the plug-in speaker could produce sound.
6. I shut down the computer.
7. I remove the usb, and I turn on again the computer using the windows 7.
8. Now, the speaker could produce sound.

It is weird but I solve my problems using that.

I had this problem when I migrated from a HDD to an SSD. Sound completely stopped, even though the signal bar was jumping. For me, it turns out that I had to uninstall the drivers, then force Windows to generate a new copy of the driver file, specifically the HDaudio.sys file.

Located in \system32\drivers\, you'll have to first change the permissions to allow you to rename/delete the file. I followed this quick guide Take Ownership of file to ADD myself (a local Admin) to the full access permissions (I'm a Network guy, not a Sysadmin, I had no idea what a TrustedInstaller was!).

Once I had the permissions, I uninstalled the drivers, renamed the HDaudio.sys file, and rebooted. Automagically, I now have sound.

by any chance have you figured out a solution to this problem?? because I have exactly the same issue.. audio plays threw my headphones plugged into the jack on my laptop a HP 64 bit windows 10, but when I link my audio interface and try to connect my studio monitors I get no sound, but if I turn my monitors off then back on I get about 2 seconds of audio then it cuts off each time I do this.... in the device playback it is showing green so the is something happening but I do not get consistent audio running threw my studio monitors... I have new monitors, new audio interface, and fairly new computer and previously I had no issue with the sound but all of a sudden messed up on me... this is really pissing me off now, I have done endless searches to try and resolve this, uninstalled drivers and reinstalled them, I have rebooted the computer countless amount of times, and basically just not sure what I am suppose to do, someone with some knowledge please help, I have been threw many forums and tried many things please surprise me with the right way to solve this problem because none of the others worked,
