Things to do to improve performance

I'm looking for any software (freeware or purchase) or ways to optimize my computer so it might run a bit faster and help it run smoother when running pc games or big applications.

Specs:
Windows 7 64bit
Xeond quad core 3.2ghz
Nvidia GTX 260
4GB of Ram
Resolution: 1920 x1080
HD Maxtor with 465 GB and 165 Free

There is no way to optimize Windows 7, it is already tweaked to perfection as most users say. I would say to manage your Start-up applications in MS Config or to defragment your hard disk to keep all the programs in easy to find spots on your HDD.
I use Advanced System Care to get rid of Junk Files, defragment my hard drive, and to clean my privacy traces, but when it comes to the "Registry Cleaner/System Security/System Optimization" areas, I keep them un-checked so they don't run.
The program also has a "Turbo Boost" option to turn-off some services to speed-up your computer for heavy gaming, then you can turn-off "turbo Boost" to re-start the programs to selected to temporarily disable, but I personally don't touch "Turbo Boost" as well.

And as another user posted, "Software cannot overcome the limitations of hardware."

EDIT: And looking at your specs you should have no problems, my computer is swap-meet material compared to yours.

*All you need do, IMO, is "computer housework" on a regular basis.

Eg
Check Disk.
Defragment
Disk Clean Up
Error Checking
Temporary Files Removal

* IE.8 - Safety - Delete Browsing History. -
-Check for unwanted plug ins.

*Make sure your windows Update is running.

*Check in Task Manager/ Processes/ All Users to see what is running there.

*Check in Event Viewer for errors frequently.
Note any with a red mark in Application & System.

* Monitor regularly >Perfmon - {Task manager - resource monitor - CPU, Memory etc}

*Remove any software you have evaluated and decided you don't want to keep.

Run: SFC /scannow (from a command prompt) - and let it check/repair/verify your system files

*Some people optimize and compact the registry. This makes me VERY nervous and consequently I don't.

How do you Disable Turbo Boost and C-State Transition (BIOS)? This is advised for Avid Pro Tools to work smoothly.

Until then Clean Up Factory Bloatware - Windows 7 Forums

Work through the safe Optimizing steps given earlier in the thread.

Do not tweak Win7 beyond normal System settings.

Okay, Pro Tools is a studio software application. I have use this for years with Windows XP and Vista. I purchased a new computer and they installed W7. It says it is compatible but I am having probelms.

How do you Disable Turbo Boost and C-State Transition (BIOS)? This is advised for Avid Pro Tools to work smoothly.

These things are enabled/disabled in the BIOS which you can access by pressing DEL, F2 or a different key on the POST screen when you first turn on your computer. The key to press is usally written on the screen, eg. "Press DEL to enter setup".

Depending on your BIOS these things could be called different names. I don't have a CPU that supports turbo boost but I think it might be called "Intel Turbo Mode Tech" or similar going by a different boards manual.

C-State is listed as "Intel C-State Tech" on my motherboard.

As for AMD CPU's and boards I have no idea is they have similar tech or what they would be called.

I find IO's game booster a very useful little utility. It can tell you if there are updates to drivers and close any services that are plain just not required when gaming.
I have it set to close 14 services and it does so automatically I run any game, turning things back on when the game quits.

Be sure that you test before making any of these changes and test afterwards. I find a lot of these applications give you a nice warm fuzzy feeling that things really improved, but in actuality, real world performance increases are simply not there.

And test with a stopwatch and such to measure real world time improvements. Using benchmark tools can be misleading as the numbers may improve and look significant, but if your overall boot time/start time only improves by 0.15ms...does it really make a difference?
