Think I may have screwed up my registry...

So I was trying to uninstall Tune Up Utilities 2011. I tried using Revo Uninstaller and it seemed to uninstall it. Afterwards it asked if I would like to clear my registry of Tune Up's values. So I hit yes without looking at the things is was going to erase. After that, my computer began acting weird, shutting down programs I was trying to open, flashing windows and stuff. So I turn off my pc and went to go start it up again. When I did, I got past the windows 7 launch screen (those little dots appearing), but then I just get stuck at a black screen. The cursor is there and I can move it but other than that nothing works. My system is a Tri-Boot between Windows 7, Vista and Ubuntu. I'm in Ubuntu now and can switch to Vista if it could help me solve my problem.

Any suggestions? Thanks :)

My initial recommendation would be a system restore, but that may not help.
If you have an Windows 7 installation disk, then you could also try a repair install of Widows to see if that did it

Other then that, Registry changes are sudo-permanent.

Hello Dyldog, and welcome to Seven Forums.

You could do a system restore at boot using a restore point (if available) dated before this to undo it.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Yeah, I knew I must have messed up something pretty bad. Safe mode doesn't work, and I don't think I have any restore points because I turned it off due to running out of hard disk space. Pretty much all of my important things are located on an external hard drive, so I should be safe there.

Thanks for all of the quick replies! :)

Revo Uninstaller creates a restore point before the uninstall so if you can get in there should be one. Do you have a recovery disk?

I don't know that one. I was thinking of the winpe repair disk. You may also be able to get into recovery by pressing F8 on startup.

I think the windows Install disk allows you to get into recovery if you have one.

Ok, so an update.

Downloaded / Burned the recovery disk. Revo did make a restore point... but when I try to restore there it tells me there is some corruption in the Disk. It told me to run chkdsk /R on the drive. I did with the command prompt in the recovery menu and it found no errors. Tried to restore again and got the same thing. I'm thinking fresh install time, any other suggestions?

Thanks for all your help :)

EDIT: Also, is there a way I can back up whats still on there? Like I said, I still have access to Vista and Ubuntu on the same machine.

If System Restore and Disk CHeck from the Repair CD Command Line don't work, try SFC -SCANNOW Run in Command Prompt at Boot also from the CD Command Line.

If this fails, you can try Startup Repair a few times from the CD. Report back anything it finds.

Because of the prompt to chdksk I would test the HD using the maker's extended diag/repair CD scan: HD Diagnostic

You can copy out your files using the CD: Copy & Paste - in Windows Recovery Console or using Vista.

Then find a Win7 retail installer to clean reinstall following these tips to get a perfect reinstall: Reinstalling Windows 7

TuneUp Utilities causes a lot of problems with Win7, which needs absolutely no tweaking beyond normal system settings - it will almost always mess up your system.

I'm say this to mostly new users. Before using any of these Tune up, tick here to fix this or that programs. Please check here on Windows 7 forum and ask questions about such programs. Asking here first will save a lot of head aches like the OP is going through. Most anything that Windows 7 needs can be done with Windows 7 and a little help from our members.

This is very true but if you read the first post it was Revo uninstaller that trashed the registry because the OP diidn't check what Revo was suggesting. Revo is normally very good but you have to check what it is doiing.

Revo is a great program if used correctly. If one would of asked I'm sure they would of been informed by some one here to be very careful ect. When Revo removes something it is removed for sure. To say it another way. If one has a 3rd party program and is not quiet sure should it be used or how to use it, please ask here. What ever the program is called. Programs like Revo, Ccleaner, Search Everything IMHO are good programs if used correctly. Measrue twice then cut the board. Don't cut the board and then measure twice. A once of questions is worth 10,000 lbs. of (how do I fix it now)!!

I totally agree. The problem is what people think that just because a program suggests removing something you should do it. Especially in the registry you should not do it unless you are absolutely certain that it will do no damage. Frequent Restore points and image backups are a great help too if you accidentally delete something critical.

I have quit using Revo because I believe most uninstallers now are thorough enough that CCleaner can find any leftovers later, and Win7 is much more tolerant of any leftovers.

Win7 seems to have progressed enough that issues like driver and program cleanup programs are not needed. I see no difference in a year using Revo vs. a year not using it in Win7, except the times Revo messed up the Registry requiring System Restore.

I was also told by a MS Engineer that Revo's registry cleaning algorithm is not as evolved as CCleaner's, and that Win7 really doesn't need it.

Windows 7 doesn't need ANY tuneup/cleaner tools. You can clean the "temp" folders yourself by hand. There are only two main ones that need to be emptied periodically and I keep shortcuts to them on my desktop.
