Solved Thinking of going to I.E. 11, but....

I have Windows 7 Pro, 64-bit and I currently have I.E. 8 still. Now I do not use I.E. 8 as my web browser, I use Firefox; probably 99% Firefox and 1% I.E. 8. Reason is that I use Firefox for my personal use, but when I run in to a problem like connections to a website or just cannot connect to the Internet, that's when I use I.E. 8 to just re-verify the issue.

But I have been thinking that some day I need to update and now that I.E. 11 is here it may be time to update in the coming months.

So before I install I.E. 11, should I;

Q1 - uninstall I.E. 8 completely? I mean go to Start>Control Panel>Uninstall a Program>Turn Windows Features on or off> and take the check off of I.E.8?

Q2 - clean out all remnants of I.E. 8 (i.e. the updates from Microsoft, etc.)?

Q3 - if yes to clean out, then what should I use?

Q4 - if installing the 64-bit version, what criteria needs to meet in order to run in 64-bit?

Q5 - or just use the 32-version?

I just really like cleaning my system before putting new installs in. Of course I will image before doing any of this. But what say everyone? Thanks

Do not uninstall IE 8 you will do more harm than good, Windows update will install it on top of the old install with no problems.

What about prepping my system for I.E. 11, any "special" Microsoft updates needed prior to installing?

How about 64-bit vs 32-bit?

If you go to Windows Update and check for new updates it will give you what is needed in any important updates if any are unchecked install them and then go back and check for new updates again and then install anything that was unchecked and you should be fine.

I'm not too sure about 64-bit versus 32-bit I personally very rarely use IE, I believe I'm still using IE 9 I have not upgraded yet.

Same here, as mentioned I am on 8. I am just wondering because in my Start> All Programs I see both versions of I.E. 8 so I figure do I need to install both or just the 64-bit which will force the 32-bit as well to update.

When you update it will update both 32 and 64.

Make a restore point 1st just in case something goes wrong.

When you install IE 11 on Windows 7 x64, both 32 bit (the default) and 64 bit IE 11 will be installed. Two versions will not show in the All Programs list. The 64 bit version is enabled by turning on Enhanced Protected Mode in IE.

Same for IE 10 and 11.

Just my personal opinion but I would avoid IE10 and IE11. I am going to roll back to IE9. The reason is IE10 and IE11 have fudged up FTP access. It doesn't work properly in windows explorer view anymore. Drag and drop is fine but double clicking a file just downloads zero bytes. FTP navigating within IE11 itself goes really slow and sluggish after a few clicks. Sky Go video doesn't work properly if you launch pop out window in IE10 or IE11. I am seeing slow access in IE10 and 11 when accessing browser interfaces of my router and one of my NAS drive. External browsing of sites is ok but I detect no speed improvement. If I launch inprivate mode then this sluggishness improves radically but why should anyone have to keep launching this way to get it working. In short IE10 and 11 are not suitable for windows 7 in my opinion.I would upgrade to IE9 so you get the HTML5 features but stick at that point. Continue to use firefox for browsing if IE9 is behind on some web technologies. 99% of sites out there are better run on IE8 and IE9, it will take years and years before sites are taking advantage of the tiny improvements IE10 and IE11 give. Basically all they do is render some web components milli-seconds faster than IE9 just so MS can have a brief run at bragging rights over Firefox and Chrome. I would take reliability and compatibility over a JPEG being displayed a tenth of a second faster.

I just saw IE11 coming down the pipe (my system was off for 6 months). I have been hiding the update. I will wait for a while and see how IE11 is doing.

Take a look at this thread. A recent update gives you the capability to clean out no longer needed updates. Just make sure you run it as an administrator (right click on it and click "Run as Administrator") and run it after you install IE11 and install all updates (see below).

Just go ahead and install IE11 then manually check for Windows updates. If there are any, that will ferret them out.
