Hi,

My PC is almost 4 years old. It was bought from EBuyer in the UK and had Windows 7 preinstalled with the C OA sticker on the side of the PCU box. Yet for some reason it has now suddenly started to give me the above message in the bottom right corner of the desktop. As yet the screen has not gone black as seems to happen with some other instances of similar problems. However Windows Update is not working properly stating that Windows could not search for new updates and stating error code C0000022 had been found.

The MGADiag.exe report is as follows:

Strangely, since running this diagnostic report and pasting it in, my screen has gone black - for the first time.

Also, I ran a MGADiag yesterday and comparing that with the one above I notice that whereas that above gives a genuine validation status, the earlier one says "Invalid license". Puzzling.

For comparison I append the earlier one below:

I do find some things interesting about the error codes that you're getting - it would seem that either the licensing service is not running, or your system has lost the ability to communicate with it.

The licensing error is 0x80070426:
Code:
  ERROR_SERVICE_NOT_ACTIVE winerror.h
# The service has not been started.
The resulting mgadiag errors are 0x80070002:
Code:
# MessageText:
  DIERR_NOTFOUND dinput.h
  DIERR_OBJECTNOTFOUND dinput.h
  STIERR_OBJECTNOTFOUND stierr.h
And the Windows Update error is 0xC0000022:
Code:
  STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED ntstatus.h
# {Access Denied}
# A process has requested access to an object, but has not
# been granted those access rights.

I think there's some clues here, but an updated mgadiag report would indeed be beneficial to see if these are still accurate.

Hallo again

Firstly thank you for responding to my mayday call so promptly. Secondly, sorry for placing two versions of the diagnostic report in the same box. Although I tried to follow the instructions in the sticky at the head of the thread, I am unfamiliar with this particualr technique so made a muck of it.

Thirdly, apologies - I should have mentioned in my initial post that between obtaining the first diagnostic report and the second, I had downloaded and run Tweaking.com's Windows All-in-one Repair Tool, which no doubt made some changes and probably explains the differences between the two versions you have spotted.

Anyhow, I have now downloaded the later version of MGAdiag from one of the links in the thread sticky. I post its findings below:

The SSPSVC has been found to be 'tampered' - this commonly means that it's been disabled, possibly by inept system 'optimizer' tools such as ASC or Wise.
Are you using any such?

I'll post more detailed diagnostic commands when I get close to a pc tomorrow.

Thanks, all, for your initial thoughts, and a happy New Year to you.

I only downloaded and ran Tweaking.com's Windows All-in-one Repair Tool after the "Windows not genuine" message first flagged up, so while it may have compounded my problems, I do not see it as being the root cause.

I am not familiar with "Wise"
I do, however have Advanced System Care Pro installed, and have used it periodically for 18 months or so without problems. I see I have a registry backups listed on it taken when ASC was run on 26-12 and 3-12. The 3-12 ones were well before the "Windows not genuine"problem first surfaced; the ASC run I did on 26-12 was, I think, after the problem emerged, although I am not too sure on that - it might have been before.

Any further thoughts, anyone?

PS Now they are superseded by the most recent MGADiag I posted in #7, is there any merit in me trying to repost the 2 older MGA Diag logs I conflated in my first post within the same code box into 2 separate code boxes?

Advanced System Care by IOBits or any other product of theirs cause many to have to do a Clean Install to fix all the problems is causes.

Once you fix a few problems ASC causes a few more pop up. Then you fix them and a few more pop up. Then one updates ASC and presto more problems. It's a never ending battle.

Hi Layback

Well, this forum is the first location where I have heard adverse comments about ASC. As I said, I have used it without problems for a while now before this windows not genuine issue occurred, and friends have similarly found it to be quite useful. I suppose I will have to think again now!

I have never use ASC I just read a lot of post where people have problem sooner or later with IOBit programs including ASC.

IOBits comes from China so I don't think anybody really know a lot about their products. All we know is IOBit stole code from Malwarebytes but got caught.

Go figure a Chaises company using counterfeits.

Interesting read.

As I tell anyone, software that portends to "clean" or "optimize" or "protect" or "improve performance" on a Windows box rarely does this, and if it does, there's usually some rather unpleasant side effect.

Short of picking a good antivirus solution and running ccleaner every so often, just... leave the system configuration alone. That's generally the best way to keep things working, well, in my experience. And yes, any product that on it's version comparison page has a feature called "Enjoy Confident Security without System Slowdown" that's only available for the most expensive version is, frankly, gonna be crap underneath. Microsoft doesn't ship Windows in some sort of horrible configuration first so that you'll buy "optimization" software - this is the technology version of snakeoil.

Another unknown thing about IOBit products.
What we don't know; did the programs gathered information off your computer and send it home to China. Like password to your bank account or credit card information. Who really knows?

What we do know about IOBits. They steal.

If a friend of mine brought me their computer that IOBit products installed the things I would do.

1. Ask them to change all password to everything using a clean computer.

2. Inform their banks, credit card companies ect. they might have been compromised.

3. Then I would do a Wipe and Clean install and all needed Windows Updates.

4. Install MSE and Malwarebytes and update.

5. Now instruct my friend how to stay away from such junk.

I have not yet had any evidence that any of my important data has been compromised despite having ASC installed for several years now so am loathe to go down the clean install route - just yet, at any rate. But clearly I shall have to do so pretty soon, I suppose, if I cannot get the current problem resolved.

I have just realised that I overlooked the request NoelDP made in his post #2 that I submit a CBS log. Here it is:

Surprisingly, there's no errors in the SFC or CheckSUR logs -

Let me detail the interesting parts....

Report #1
Code:
Cached Online Validation Code: N/A, hr = 0xc0000022

Licensing Data-->
On a computer running Microsoft Windows non-core edition, run 'slui.exe 0x2a 0x80070426' to display the error text.
Error: 0x80070426

Report #2
Code:
 Licensing Data-->
C:\Windows\system32\slmgr.vbs(22, 1) Microsoft VBScript runtime error: File name or class name not found during Automation operation: 'CreateObject'

Report #1's error combo is reasonably common - and is often caused by problems with the SPLDR service (themselves often the result of AV interferences)

Report #2 is however rather rare - I think it's only about the third time Ive seen this specific one, and in neither previous case was I able to fully resolve the problem.

Please try this first.....

Close all open windows.
Open an Elevated Command Prompt window, and type the following command

wusa /uninstall /kb:971033

and hit the Enter key
Accept the warnings/confirmations, and wait for it to complete

copy and paste the output (if any) from the command prompt window to a reply here,
Reboot

reinstall the update from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971033
Reboot TWICE

run another MGADiag report, and post it.

Thank you for finding time to come back on my problem. I have now gone through the routine you suggested - I hope fully completing every step including rebooting twice.

Firstly, there was no output in the cmd window after running the command you gave me.

Secondly I post below the MGADiag output after completing the installation of KB971033
