Interesting topic, good reads.
I've been cloning periodically for about 3 years with my Desktop PC and Laptop PC (both Win 7 Home Premium x64 OEM versions) with no issues. I recently began cloning my Mom's Win XP HP "Pavillion" PC.
With all 3 PC's, I've not encountered the cloning issues that I've read about here and elsewhere, with the "The copy of Windows is not genuine" issues. I've also Imaged (full-HDD) using Macrium Reflect and Acronis (2011 ver) with no problems encountered.
I've often wondered why I haven't experienced the various cloning issues on my PC's.
Could it possibly be related to "Retail" vs "OEM" Windows versions or how I'm prepping my Target HDD's before beginning the cloning or Imaging process?
I always delete the partitions on the Target HDD before booting into my cloning tools. That's not necessary but I do that to make it easy to distinguish between the Source and Target HDD's when I'm setting up the cloning process within the cloning/imaging dialog screens since the Target HDD will appear as "unallocated".
I've read about the drive letter conflicts but have never encountered that issue. I'm just curious as to why that problem occurs as I've read about it elsewhere as well as in this forum.
If cloning duplicates the complete HDD, would it not also assign the Target HDD as the "C" HDD?
Also, I read this in the Q&A section at the "DriveClone" site:
Q: "I used your latest version. After it completed I plugged in computer and it showed - 'The copy of Windows is not genuine.'"
A: "This is normal. Your drive has been successfully cloned with DriveClone. When you boot on the cloned drive, Microsoft Windows detects a varieties of things including hard drive unique serial number. The message showed because the cloned drive has not been registered on Microsoft. To eliminate it, you will need to register with Microsoft online."
I haven't seen this problem with any of my PC's. Perhaps that's due to my Source and Target HDD's being identical Seagate Barracuda 1 Tb HDD's. However, all HDD's have unique serial #'s so that doesn't make sense to me when I read this at the DriveClone site.
On the other hand, I've cloned my Mom's Win XP PC with the original Samsung 160 Gb HDD and a Seagate Barracuda HDD (same size) with no issues.
