this might sound kind of weird, and id like to avoid getting into the details... but id like to find, or make a 2 stage key for one from one of my thumb drives.

i have some data on my computer i would like to lock with both a password, AND a thumb drive containing a certain set of documents/images to be plugged in.

i dont want to only use a password, dunno if its me just paranoid, but i run servers right off my pc and it feels like a legit threat (these are private, secure servers i have found people i dont know on 0.o).

i want to find a program that already does this before i decide to whip visual studio out and spend the next month and a half trying to make an application that might easily be obtained another way.

the concept would be that i open the file, type in the password, and then plug in the thumbdrive, not in any particular order.

if this seems to far out, i understand, and if you think you have another idea, i appreciate your support. id like not to be fought to much on the level of security, but i am open to other similar methods... thank you

i just read an article on life hacker bout this actually, what they are doing is SIMILAR to what i want, but i dont want it for websits, i want it for documents... is there a way i could use keypass with a thumbdrive login? so that all the virtual encrypted drives it makes, i can only access with a USB "Key"

"PREDITOR" also does somthing interesting, but it locks the WHOLE PC!!! now if i could have it lock only 1 acct on the pc i might be happy, but i dont want my whole pc locked incase i loose the thumb drive or i get a virus that prevents usb keys from working (ive had them... they suck)

Hi Buddy,

you could use truecrypt for usb encryption! Quite a good bit of software

thank you so much, i have used this before, but never figured out how to usb encrypt... i am correct in that this will csreate a virtual drive, that i can use a usb key to enter? and not that this will lock the usb key..?

just did some more research, and this is not entierly what i need, but it apears true crypt may still work, i guess there is a method of placing files on a usb stick, but keeping the directory in the volume, the only way to access the files on the usb stick is to plug it in to the computer containing the correct truecrypt voluem and the proper directories

actually just figured it out... forgot to post. use a GUID generator to generate a few passwords, plug them into a .txt documant, then when you setup a new drive, set the paskey loaction to the text document which you will have located to the thumb drive...

it was actually really easy, thank you all though

my lord... thank you, but i think thats a little bit over kill... the concept is correct, but i dont need large corperation level security, i just am trying to better protect some things from people who may hack my servers (its happened)

I have YubiKeys and fully encrypt all my PCs with TrueCrypt, its great and when I boot, just after the screen flash of Sony VAIO as you turn it on, it asks you to insert the key then it is so fast to decrypt it for that session.

If you hibernate or turn off the system, next time you turn it on it does the same too.

im sure they are great... and im sure i may use somthing likem in the future, if not that brand, but i think i should have mentioned that i was looking for a relitivly free or inexpensive option.

i think i posted how i managed to use true crypt to work with it...

i use note pad and make a hiden file on the thumbdrive... use the microsoft guid gen provided with visual studio to generate a few random keys... install the thumbdrive, then open truecrypt, create the drive and use a document for the key... find the document on your thumb drive, and proceed to create a password... when you insert your thumbdrive, and double click on your true crypt drive... you will be asked to type in your password, that is all... no thumb drive, no entry

A way to get it for free is to download TrueCrypt and then encrypt your hard drive with it, but with a password that you know, instead of needing to buy a $25 YubiKey.

Hope this helps :)
