Thunderbird prevents sleep mode

When i run thunderbird and leave it running computer does not enter sleep mode or hibernation.
If I shut down thunderbird it is all fine and goes to / from sleep mode without any issue.

Any ideas how to fix this?

Take a look at your server settings in Thunderbird. How often does it check for new messages?

Take a look at your sleep settings. How long does the computer have to be idle in order to invoke sleep?

Yeah, might also try disabling Allow Wake Timers, to see if it stops it.

No probs. here with sleep and Thunderbird. Post more details about your system configuration if you can.

Carolyn is true guru - server was checking for email every 5 minutes. changed it to 60 and all works
