Tiny annoyance with a stripped Windows 7

Hi

I'm using one of the stripped down builds on Windows 7 floating around on the web.

I was under the assumption that these builds are much faster and responsive than the vanilla builds... this one is (for the most part), except during login.

When i click on my user account, it says "Welcome", and stays rather long at "Preparing your desktop" and then goes to my desktop. What gives?!

This never happened on a plain build, my desktop would be given to me within a mere seconds of clicking on the user account.

Any ideas what it could be?

Regards

i think this is your problem:

I'm using one of the stripped down builds on Windows 7 floating around on the web.

unless you prepared the custom build yourself, and you know exactly what you are doing, the chances are very slim that you will have a positive experience using these. every user has different needs and the basic windows experience is designed to cater to as many as possible.

but you have installed a single user's idea of the ideal OS. the chances that it will be just right for you too are really very slim.

windows 7 is snappy. it's even comparable to XP. there is really no good reason to mess with these hack'n'slash builds. i would very strongly suggest formatting your machine and doing a fresh install from a proper ISO.

Possibly a corrupt user profile.

You really are better off installing a full copy and then tweaking / removing components yourself.

Hmm

Well I could install a full copy again, but I dont think I'd be able to tweak it to this magnitude.

The stripped build performs well except for that one little problem I'm facing.

off topic: How many 7600.16385 builds were there actually? I remember one had March 2010 expiry and another was RTM.

the march 2010 expiration comes from people using bad activation cracks.

have you ever installed the full version of windows 7? can you offer empirical evidence that shows your mutilated version is somehow superior?

ahh...the one by eXPerience....looks like it auto-activates itself. I would be wary of that eventhough the group has been known for good releases. If you don't want to use that lite build but are still into looking for one than lookup Windows 7 Media Edition or Elite Edition or Xtreme (if liquid ever released it) Edition. Me and liquid made Media Edition and Elite Edition. If you can wait a bit longer than I am testing the upcoming ZLite Edition (by SFT)

absolutely...

I am waiting for a Windows 7 Xtreme build or something of the sort to be released by SFT. When that happens I will install that build.

That is a very wrong misconception. The amount of HDD space taken up doesn't affect performance. Unless you have such a small drive that there is barely any free space.

I can tell you from experience, ripping parts out of the OS doesn't make it any faster or responsive. In fact it can have a lot more of a negative impact then anything. (Case and point, your slow login problem)

Although the discussion of the of the merits or not of stripped down windows builds is OK, any discussion of self activating and thus cracked builds is a breach of forum rules.
