Hello Joan.



To start with you would need to (in disk management) right click the windows 7 partition and select " Mark as Active ..." then you would need to run a startup repair at least 3 times on Win 7 to create the boot files in the Windows 7 partition then you could remove Vista at your leisure.

Thanks Ted this is something that I have to have all the information to hand before doing anything, I don't rush it, it took me quite a time before I first did the partition work and dual booting with WinME and XP. I did have PowerQuests Partition Magic at that time though to do all the work with the partitions.

I was always under the impression though that I'd have to have some sort of partition program as you can't move back and Vista is at the front of the drive as that was installed first. I just shrunk it's partition and then formatted the unallocated space and installed Windows 7.

The above steps are needed because your Vista is the "System Partition" and Windows will not let you delete/remove the system partition.


You are correct Joan, you would need a program to do the partition work for you, a lot of us this excellent free version to do that.

Partition Wizard is a Magic Server Partition Manager Software for Windows Server 2000/2003/2008 and Windows 2000/XP/Vista/Windows 7.

I still have my copy of Partition Magic too. The free Home Edition of Partition Wizard is very popular here: BEST FREE Partition Manager Software for Windows supports all 32-bit & 64 bit Windows No-server OS.

I find it easier to use than Partition Magic. You can have Windows 7 burn it to a CD or install it to the hard drive. When you are ready to remove Vista, Partition Wizard can remove the Vista partition and extend your Windows 7 partition to the left into the empty space.

I'm just arriving today.. wanted to Congrat you ..on your ladt official work day before retirement.,, tomorrow you will be a free bird again.. all kidding aside this is a very new different phase you are heading into.. I wish you time enought to enjoy being free of a regular schedule.. along with enough schedule to keep you moving daily.. you must have some Windows 7 Forum time .. now it's time to really get out there and Enjoy thos things you couldn't or didn't have free time to do.

Ohhh Tom.. I so hate when my pc is in a mess or not working.. glad you have the old XP to fall back on.. mine is quite aged also.. I hope you can get it going or add a new one when possible. Good luck
