this reduces the memory use by a large margin.

I have to ask, but what is the gain? Do you get something out of reducing the active memory used?

the setting directly controls the amount of pages cached for the fastback function, on systems with 2GB+ ram it can easily see firefox use up to 800MB's with very few tabs open.

And what is wrong with that? If it releases when required is that such a problem? Using RAM makes things go faster not slower.

Absolutely right. The best situation is when all the RAM that is not used by active programs is being used for caching. That gives fast access to those cached instances by superfetch an is still "available" for new programs to be loaded. This is an example of good RAM usage.

if you want more speed you can always get a 1-4GB USB key for ready boost i use it on my main system with 12GB ram

I do not use IE. I have been using FF since oct 2008 on win7.

Irrelevant how much ram he has - 220mb is a lot for FF to be using.

The OP has 8 GB of RAM, usage should be the least of his concern. 220 mb is nothing.

No it isn't. You obviously know very little about Firefox's typical memory usage. stop basing it on IE.

OP, 50+% memory use in 7/vista is entirely normal during normal use.
Your sidebar using 25% cpu use definitely abnormal though, what gadgets do you have running?
