Toshiba C660D

I have a Toshiba C660D but when booting the laptop it gets passed the welcome screen but it then says "windows explorer crashed" and prevents me from doing anything else i.e. No desktop icons load

It seems like someone turned off the laptop half way through a windows update.

Spec:

Toshiba C660D
Windows 7 64Bit

Any idea on how to fix this?

I do not know a permanent solution but you could try manually opening explorer.exe every time you startup.
1.Press Ctrl+Alt+Del and click on task manager.
2.Go to processes and stop explorer.exe if it is still there.
3.Click File and then New Task.
4.Type in explorer.exe and click ok.
If the taskbar appears, it has sucessfully started Windows Explorer.

Thank you for the suggestion but soon as I type explorer.exe it crashes several seconds in writing explorer.exe so I end up typing expl then it crashes.

Unfortunately never worked.

It says an sfc is pending, please restart so I restart and then try but get the same message.

Well unless you are willing to do a clean install, your only choice is to manually start programs with task manager.

The problem is I can't manually start programs with task manager because it crashes.

Oh then I think it is time for you to backup files using another os (if possible) and do a clean install of either Windows 7 or Windows 8. First do this to create a flash drive with the rescue os: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/287439-emergency-kit-save-your-files-dead-os.html
