Solved reinstall Windows 7 on a Toshiba Satellite C655-S5307

Good evening, I have a 10yo Toshiba Satellite laptop that came with Windows 7 Home Premium that is running slow so I would like to reinstall Windows 7 since I have some programs that need it to run. I have the product key but no cd/dvd or usb. What can I do to do this? Thanks in advance, Mike

Welcome to the forum. Is disk manager is there a recover parition most pcs came with a method of putting back to factory setting via a parition.

To recover the original factory image using the utilities on your
computer’s internal storage drive:

Make sure the computer is turned off.

While powering on your computer, press the
F12
key when the
initial TOSHIBA screen displays.
The boot menu appears.

Using the arrow keys to scroll down, select the
HDD Recovery
option, and then press the
ENTER
key.

Thanks, when I get to the boot options the hddrecovery drive is not there. When I go to my computer the hdd recover drive is there but it is red, what does that mean? When I watch the video the warning screen never comes up. The computer is a dual boot with Linux 18 and when I start it it always comes up asking me which system I want to boot to. Could the dual boot be a problem? I have the product key but no cd/dvd. Thanks, Mike

red means the partition is quite full. It is normal for oems to make recov partitions only slighly bigger than the contents.

If you cant get the toshiba recov program to work:

1. use dism++ to Bakup activation and drivers

2. reinstall from win7 x64 home prem ( including sp1) media. skip entering the key during install.

3. When you get to the desktop , restore activation and drivers.

4. run simplix to get updates https://update7.simplix.info/UpdatePack7R2.exe

The original boot loader was replaced by Linux Grub.

According to its marketing specs, it originally came with Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64-bit.

If your listed specs are correct, it appears that its original HDD has been replaced with a SSD.

Does it still have a measly 4 GB of RAM?

SIW2, As OP doesn't have the disks or the iso but has an image on the recovery partition, why not use it with the help of one of your tools?

I did install a ssd that I run Linux 20? mint. Right now I have put the original hdd with Win 7 and Linux 18? mint as a dual boot

I just installed the Toshiba Recovery Media Creator and ran it and it said No HDD Recovery Area, cannot be launched

Use a hashtool to check the iso.

If you have 7zip, there is a hash option in that.

And guess what, I also found the recovery cds I had ordered from Toshiba years ago. Unfortunately I found them after I had tried to do a backup and only let it do one dvd and when I tried to reboot I had left that dvd in and it just kept rebooting and when I realized that I took it out and I was able to try to recover and it came up to the infamous red warning screen so I was able to reinstall win 7. I'm guessing that when I left the one back up dvd in it fixed something ??? Anyway it is up and running now, THANKS EVERYONE.My only problem now is I can not bring up any website even though it says I'm connected to the internet. I remember when I installed Linux as a dual boot the internet dn work and it was a problem with the network card (Realtek 8188CE). I don't think the drivers would work with Linux 18. I found a workaround after much searching and experimenting using a driver for a different Realtek card (I also bought a usb dongle wifi and it worked that way also). Maybe that driver is still there and I need to change it back to run win 7? Is the driver on the hd or saved to the mb. If I change it back and then put the SSD back in with Linux 20 will I still have an internet problem? So sorry this is so long, so much of this I did a while back and it is slowly coming back to me.

I was finaly able to restore when the red warning screen came up and when I did a windows update it found about 50 updates (mostly security updates) and I did them all, I was surprised I could still do that. Thank again every one and again I'm sorry for the long confusing update. Mike

now I have to try that. Once I had win 7 up and running I thought I would try my official Toshiba recovery disk but it wn boot to them so I tried my 5 recovery disks I found and disk one seemed to be working but it errored out, might have said boot loader and now when I try to start up the computer it says no boot loaded found, any tips/suggestions. When I hooked the hhd up to another computer via usb it shows very little on it so I think my only option is to get a new copy of Win7 from ebay or somewhere, Thanks everyone, Mike

Where is the best place to get a copy of win 7? I don't know why the recovery set from Toshiba and my own set would not work, both keep saying it couldn't read all the files from the source disk. Thanks, Mike

Thanks, I'd appreciate that. To use it do I just run it thru Rufus and boot to it? I've had some bad experiences installing Linux with a downloaded ISO. They say to check the integrity and authenticate the ISO download. I didn't quite understand why you had to do that since it came from them but I finally got it to work. I might create a dual boot with win 7 and win 10. Thanks, Mike
