Transcend 1tb ehd not showing in my computer

Hi
I have a 1tb Transcend storejet ehd and has always worked fine since I got it a few months ago till today last night I left it plugged in with my laptop open and this morning it wasn't listed in my computer
I have restarted the laptop and tried all usb ports but nothing.
It is showing up though under devices and printers and I did the troubleshooter and nothing
I read online about going in computer management and earlier under disk management it was not showing at the top but was showing at the bottom in those box bits but I ejected it and took it round my friends to see if it would work on his laptop and it was just doing the same as mine not being under my computer but since I got home it isn't showing at the bottom of disk management although it is still under devices and printers.
I really don't know what else to do I am so worried because it has every photo and video of my youngest daughters on there since they were born and I was in the process of backing it all up on another ehd when this happened please It would mean so much if someone could help me to try and get it working or recovering everything on it

Welcome to the forum what doe sit show as in devices is as a hard drive or other. Have you tried another usb cable

Is the UDB HD self powered or AC mains powered.?

I use a 500gb portable HD for all my data from my laptop.(I move the portable HD between various PC etc)
It used to show on WinExp then one day it would not.

USB ports are very limited to the number of external devices they can support, especially if running multiple devices, or in my case one portable HD. Portable HDs have to suck enough power through the USB port just to spin-up.

If you are trying to transfer data between self-powered devices it can be a big ask of limted power supply through USB ports.
Best illustrated ... when recharging a phone through PC-USB versus connect the phone to a mains power charger. The mains power charger much quicker.

My solution was a powered hub. 3volt supply has more grunt than 2v. The 2v used to get very hot, a sign of excessive demand. I was assured on this forum that 3volts would not cause problems to my laptop (and after about 6 months I have had no problems)
Self powered hubs did not fix my HD problem.

Though a mains powered hub I run the external HD + 3 thumbdrives without any problems.
Without the mains powered hub I can only run one USB thumb drive.
I did try a real cheap powered hub for about $6.00 but it got very hot, I replaced it with a $20.00 and have never looked back.

One irritation with external drives is when they go to sleep (when not used for a time) and you want to open or save a file, the external HD will be a little slow to respond.
Another irritation I have is when the PC goes to "sleep" after a period of non use, the portable HD loses connection and then reconnects in a flurry of configeration popups (bottom right-hand of task bar)

Samuria raised a good point too. Longer USB cables will reduce the reliability (juice) available to connected devices.

In all these cases consider using sky drive or google drive to backup valuable data it can be done automatically if you put things in the folder and it gives you 14 gig of backup which you can get from any where in the world on pc, phone or tablet and its safe if you have a disaster at home both are free
