Hello,

I brought my mum a new laptop but she has over 80GB's of photos music and documents to transfer and it took 3 days to transfer via ethernet from her old one to her current one. I dont have an external drive so ethernet is the only safe way (i guess).

but a few years ago i could swap out a hdd from a asus laptop with intel cpu, amd gpu and a dell inspiron 6400 with intel cpu and intel gpu.

they both were accepted and the only things i needed to change were gpu drivers.

this time i get an activation error which i didnt get before.

any suggestions?

The "activation error" has to do with the new hard drive ... You will need to re-activate your Mom's Windows Key. Is this an OEM (original equipment manufacturer?) The serial of the HDD is one of many factors that are taken into account for activation. Is the original product key still on the laptop?
You can activate by phone - http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/18715-activate-win
