Hi

Well I have had no issues till now with anything in Win 7 64Bit, but this has got me beat and is doing my head in. I have done a search and while I have found some things close, nothing really solves it.

Till this point Outlook and MSN Live Messenger ( occassional use ) did not have a tray icon. They simply existed on the Taskbar and went away when i closed it. Can't remember if i "hacked" it or what, they just didn't appear. Well today they came back in the notification area and will not go away. :(

I can set to "Hide icon and Notifications" in the "Customize Notification Icons" but they are still active "behind the arrow". Something has gone amiss. I know it's a small annoyance, but help would be appreciated.

My first problem and it's this, sad really!!

Thanks,

Greig :D

HI

Thanks for the replies. This has not helped.

I may not have made it clear in the OP. I do not want these programs to show a tray icon at any time. They have not done so till now, and i cannot stop them now it's started.

Thanks again

So, specifically confirm - by direct examination - that the conditions referenced do not apply.

Have you tried this?

1. Right click an empty area on the taskbar, click properties
2. under notifications area, click customize
3. click 'turn system icons on or off'
4. click "off" to remove the icon you don't want in the notification area
5. click ok, then ok again

@ Antman: I see i may have confused this! They start when the program is started and go away when the program is stopped.

Till the other day they did not appear at all, when program was running or not, they stayed off. I have changed no settings or updated anything, installed anything in the last week or so.

I believe that I know exactly what you want...

Here is the quickest route to fix this...

Right click the clock and choose Customize notification icons. Now you will see a list of all icons that have opened on the tray. For outlook choose the outlook listing and choose from the drop down menu "Hide icon and notifications". Rinse repeat for any additional things you don't want to show up. Make sure you hit okay to apply settings (I have a nasty habit of hitting the x in this window for some reason)

I might be on the wrong track, but Messenger icon stays in tray because hotmail forces it to appear with an ActiveX command.

If you don't want Messenger icon to appear in systray when you open Hotmail,

Download ActiveXHelper
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/axhelper.html

Run it...Default settings...
Find "MSNMessenger.HotmailControl"...disable...
Find "MSNMessenger.Hotmail2Control"...disable...

One thing to add,

certain programs have always been difficult to hide their tray icons in previous OS's due to the way they internally manage the icon.

I've seen several in XP and Vista which would keep re-appearing when instructed to auto hide.

This was often the case with those applications that use multiple icons

This was solvable only by instructing the application itself not to show the icon or by individually setting each icon to hide when it appeared.

The system for the tray has been overhauled considerably and this may be a potential cause of this issue. I have just checked my own customize dialogue for the system tray and I have a total of three entries for Outlook plus one a .Net entry that shows the Outlook icon so may be related.

You may want to check that all icons that show a relationship to Outlook are set with Never Notify

Hi

Barman58, thank you for that.

I have checked and all the appropriate ones are set correctly. I only have two Oulook Icons.

I can however report a fix with MSN Messenger. I turned of compatability and its gone! I had set this to "Vista" to try and solve some freezing issues a while back. The icon did not appear all those weeks ago but only a few days ago. Anyway, i turned it off and the icon has gone! I have since tracked this down on a Messenger site as well, as a cause of the icon appearing.

Going to hav a look at the ActiveX tool now.

Thanks, all replys are appreciated.

Chuckle. A more fitting pennance would be to write it once. And read it 500 times.

Hi Greig,

When you have finished your lines (no cut and paste allowed ;) ).

Outlook does have an option, buried deep in the advanced options, an option to show an icon when a mail is received.

You may want to confirm that this is not enabled as it could well cause the main icon's status to be reset.

You would expect that Microsoft applications would be fully compliant with a new Microsoft OS, but this is unfortunately not always the case :( ,although they do tend to catch-up eventually :)

Thanks. Been and checked it. All as it should be. I generally love office. Only package i have used since 94:o, and this incarnation is superb. I will forgive it's little foibles this time! It may be easier to sort out once Win7 matures a tad.

Thanks
