Solved Trim Command not working in Win7

Just installed a Samsung 840 EVO 250GB SSD. Two programs that I use, Hard Disk Sentinel and TrimCheck, both report that trim in not working. The fsutil command returns "0" indicating trim is active. Two other utilities indicate that the SSD supports trim and the feature is active.

PC is Win7 Home Premium 64Bit. SSD is on Sata II Intel controller, PC has a Marvell Sata III controller as well but performance benchmarks are poor. All components have current drivers or firmware. AHCI is active on all Sata ports. Window does recognize the Samsung drive as an SSD.

Have tried all the fixes I know about with no success. I have an identical Samsung drive in another PC and trim is working fine. Any comments or assistance will be much appreciated.

Also, the drive is producing fairly unusual numbers in benchmark tests as you can see from the attachments.

Looking forward to suggestions.

Hello and welcome fcain mate am no expert but those figures look a bit out of whack as I have the same EVO in my main machine. Now I am not suggesting you do not know what you are doing but check the trim command again Make Sure TRIM Is Enabled for Your Solid State Drive in Windows 7 for Better Performance

My laptop here now with an SanDisk Extreme shows the figures in the pic. I don't have any software like the Magician for it but do set mine at home to optimize and all that stuff.

Thanks for the reply.

Trim command still returns "0" (see attachment) and trim still reported as not working. As far as the benchmark numbers are concerned, I'm getting similar results on my other Samsung install. Also, on my problem PC, Magician is causing a blue screen error when I set up Advanced Settings in the OS Optimization tab. I'm beginning to think that the problem(s) are tied to Samsung's latest version of Magician and the ssd controller. BTW, whether the ssd is connected to the Intel sata controller or the Marvell controller, the same problem exists with the trim function. My thought, at this point, is that the trim function on the ssd is disabled.

Let me know if you have any further thoughts.

Thanks ..... fcain

A zero indicates Trim is enabled.

I take it your board doesn`t do Sata 3, 6 Gbps ?

The board does have sata 3, 6Gbps. It's on a Marvell controller which are known to be quite slow and unfriendly to today's ssd's. I have tried both the Marvell ports, sata 3, and the Intel ports, sata 2, with the same results as far as trim function. The Intel ports benchmark higher than the Marvell. One of the utilities I used, Hard Disk Sentinel, indicates that the trim feature on the ssd is disabled (see attachment).

Thank you,

fcain

Hmm well this sort of points the finger at the board a bit doesn't it? From your specs looks like you laid out some reasonable amount for it and I would be contacting Asus re the problem.
Otherwise maybe those diagnostic programs ahs got it wrong and the TRIM is actually working. Personally I am not a fan of those add on test software's and if the command line is reporting the TRIM is on then I would go by it.
I suppose another option if you haven't done it already is to update the chipset as I cannot find any programs for testing the motherboard controllers.

Just out of interest have you run either of these

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/433-disk-check.html < use the /f option in Option 2 ifnecessary
a long shot but being quick to run would eliminate problems from that direction.

I would also run these too

ICit2lol, I have a feeling your opinion of add-on test software has a good deal of merit, at least in the case of TRIM. I get conflicting results from these add-ons. I did, however, get one positive result from TrimCheck, indicating that TRIM was working on the PC. There appears to be no consensus, even among tech folks, as to when an SSD runs its garbage collection feature in response to a TRIM command. Also, as I have read, most software designed to detect TRIM activity cannot detect "moderate" activity. So, I'm hopping on your bus and accepting what the command line is reporting regarding TRIM.

Regarding your suggestions...

The chipset is already valid and up to date. Asus put out only one revision in 2011, and this is the one I have.

I had already run sfc /scannow and full chkdsk without issue.

I run Malwarebytes (paid version) on this machine.

On the off chance that TRIM is not working, there is always the option of secure erase and restore from a disk/partition image somewhere down the road :geek:.

The only other issue to address, as time permits, is why both Samsung Magician and AS SSD Benchmark are reporting such ridiculously high numbers for both of my Samsung SSDs. If they were truly that fast, I'd have to anchor the cases to the floor!

Thank you for your time, responses and help. I'll mark this thread solved. Will start new thread if anything new arises.

Regards ... fcain

Well I guess it is like anything in the machines some stuff cannot be fathomed out. Just out of curiosity I would uninstall and reinstall the Magician and AS SSD and run them again but only if I had nothing better to do because if the thing is running well then you know what they say about unbroken wheels LOL!!

Just as by the by I do like your reply it was worded very pleasantly as sometimes one can get a bit of a flaming from time to time.:)

John,

I will try your suggestion on those two pieces of software.

As far as the reply, I have always had a bit of admiration for someone, such as yourself, who puts forth an earnest effort to assist a fellow Windows user, not knowing the machine's condition and state of the OS registry as well as not being privy to a list of 3rd party software present on the machine, any piece of which could be interfering with the operating system (we all know it's not a Mac). Along with that bit of admiration there should be a healthy dose of respect as well, so thanks again.

By the way, I have a friend I game with who lives in NSW. He lived in Mungindi but recently moved back to civilization, don't have the new town/city name in front of me. A trip down under to meet him in person is not in the works but definitely on my bucket list.

Regards .... Frank

Hiyya Frank well that place is along way from me although I have travelled up to Lightning Ridge
Lightning Ridge, New South Wales - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia on my now retired bike as I had to give it away after wrecking my shoulder prospecting (see pic) if you are interested it was a '98 1100cc Yamaha Virago Special, and me being a small bloke looked real small on it LOL!!

(about the same distance as Mungindi) Mungindi - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia if you Google pics of Mungindi it will show you pics of the place. It is out woop woop as we say out here - meaning a bloody long way from anywhere LOL!!
I live at a place called Cudal in the central west NSW Cudal, New South Wales - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia and am lucky to be only four hours drive from Sydney whereas your friend would drive for about ten hours from there.
It's a long way from my birthplace in England and have never regretted one moment coming out here - just a great place to live and just be.

So one of my all time interests has been electronics and computing naturally fell into the empty slot for my retirement and enjoyment really.
Am no expert as I am a registered nurse by professional and have just picked up bits here and there from here mostly and have many great friends in here and sadly one named Britton30 died recently and it has been hard to get back into the swing but think I owe a lot to him and so keep on. Plus I just plain enjoy it:)

still it is nice to meet you - take care mate.
John
