trouble dual booting xp from 7

Ok so im having the usual problems, I have installed windows 7. Then i cant access xp unless i go into my bios and move the HD that my xp is installed on to the front. So basically i dont get the boot load screen. I downlowded easybcd but when i do the step to add XP to the list it says it is going to add those 2 files that start with a N (sorry i dont know them exaclty im on a work computer atm.) But then the program loads and loads then stop and does that "not responding" crap. If i close it and go it in looks like it put a new boot it. So i got to restart

And it has a boot load finally, but i can only get into win 7 from it. With xp it gives that error same files are missing. I cant seem to find the files in on the HD with xp to copy into the files with windows 7, and i can honestly say im not even sure where to find them. But i dont know what to do anymore..been messing with this thing for 5 days now

Where it says Startup and Recovery, click settings.

Now for:

Always booting XP:
In the drop down menu, where it says "Default operating system" select Windows XP OR Earlier Version of Windows.

If you wish to dual boot:
Below the drop down menu, there's a box where it says "Time to display list of operating systems"
Check it and select the seconds, default is 30.


If you keep hitting error on XP, try installing Windows itself in the Windows (Which I don't recommend) as a last resort. Just get the XP disc, and select the drive of your XP and, without formatting, moving, deleting, or something, install it right there.

First remember to backup everything you have from the Win XP partition.

ok so update, i manually copied the boot.ini, nlldr, and the NTDETECT.com files myself. That seemed to get me over the hump...for now. Then next problem that i have is that i when the boot menu comes up and i click on xp it comes up with

Windows root>/system32/ntoskrnl.exe file is missing and that i need to reinstall the file. Any ideas of what to do now???

Having the two OS's remain independent and boot via the BIOS is actually the best way to do a dual boot IF you have a BIOS shortcut key (normally F10 or F12) so you can choose the other HD if you don't want to boot to the one set first in BIOS boot order.

Look on your first bootup screen for the key given for Boot Menu and see if that makes it easier for you.

If you still want the Windows managed Dual Boot, then post back a screenshot of your full Disk management drive map and the EasyBCD front screen listings, using Snipping Tool in Start Menu and attaching file with paper clip in Reply Box.
